Less successful, however, is the insertion of a new large and spectacularly ugly metal fire escape protruding from the rear of the house and leading to the first floor.
Although almost all the workmanship is Irish, inspiration for the second floor's decoration seems to have come from inter-war French design, evident in such details as the doors of the main "de Valera Suite" which are inlaid with ebony on one side and sheeted in gold leaf on the other.
Secondly, and more importantly, Farmleigh itself is a building of no historical or architectural merit; for the Cabinet which approved its purchase, presumably the house's principal attraction was convenience of location close to the city centre.

Farmleigh, an estate of 78 acres situated to the north-west of Dublin's Phoenix Park, was purchased from the Guinness family by the Irish Government in 1999 for €29.2m.
Originally a small Georgian house built in the late 18th century, Farmleigh was purchased by Edward Cecil Guinness (1847-1927) on his marriage to his cousin, Adelaide Guinness in 1873.
With the addition of a new Conservatory adjoining the Ballroom in 1901, increased planting of broadleaves and exotics in the gardens, Farmleigh had, by the early years of the 20th century, all the requisites for gracious living and stylish entertainment.

Nevertheless after some discussion the idea of a 'Bring the noise' march on Farmleigh was agreed as one of a number of events for the weekend.
The media work turned out to be very important here as it was the only way we had to inform the bulk of the population that the new assembly point for the march was a couple of kilometers from the previously advertised point.

Farmleigh House lies behind the camera and the lake to the camera's left.
Situated immediately adjacent to the Phoenix Park, itself the largest park in an urban area in the whole of Europe, Farmleigh is a 78 acre estate purchased by the Irish government from the Guinness family in recent years for the state.
When not playing host to foreign dignatories (much use was made of the facility in Ireland's recent presidency of the European Union) the house and its grounds are open for guided tours to the general public, free of admission.

McAleese, in Aras an Uachtaráin last week was proof positive that the Laois Association in Dublin is active after a time in the not too distant past when its activities had wound down to a great extent.
Farmleigh is used to house visiting dignitaries who so far including Ethiopian, Nigerian, Lithuanian and Moroccan officials - and if, as people such as Vincent Browne seems to suggest, money is such a huge consideration, perhaps the facility could be used at some stage in the future to actually make an income for the state.
There is so much history at the house coming from Guinness family, who formerly owned the Farmleigh and are a part of the history of the State.

 New Guinness terms on Farmleigh furniture - Irish Architectural News
A protracted debate between the Office of Public Works (OPW) and the Guinness family over the terms of the sale of the Farmleigh mansion was resolved last week.
OPW architect David Byers, who is overseeing the conversion of Farmleigh into a state guesthouse, has claimed that the Guinness family have removed two thirds of the contents despite an "understanding" that the bulk of the items would remain on semi-permanent loan to the state.
The Iveagh Trustees have disputed this claim as "nonsense".
