The 4000 acre (16 km²) park is located on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille in the Bitterroot Mountains.
The park hosted the 1965 National Girl Scout Senior Roundup, 12th World Scout Jamboree in 1967, the National Scout jamboree in 1969 and 1973.

The state park system got the cabins for $12,000 each from a Billings firm, Aldrich & Co. Though many states are using the cabins in their state parks, the design of Idaho's cabins includes some unique features, including the porch swing and a steeply pitched roof designed to withstand winter snows.
At Farragut, three of the cabins are going into three existing camping loops that are typically rented out to groups, to allow groups to include someone who doesn't have an RV or tent.
In addition to the new cabins at Farragut and Priest, the state is installing eight new cabins each at Hells Gate and Three Island Crossing state parks; three at Henrys Lake State Park; and two at Bruneau Dunes State Park.
