Synoptic Gospels Primer - Glossary: Austin Farrer
In an era when systematic theology had largely become divorced from biblical analysis, Farrer challenged form and source criticism's fragmentation of the gospels by proposing that the evangelists be treated as authors rather than editors.
The Q hypothesis is not, of itself, a probable hypothesis.
Farrer identified Deuteronomy as the inspiration of Luke's design for his teaching section and argued that the composition of the latter was less problematic than others had claimed.

The foundation of evidence for the hypothesis is the writings of the John Robinson: historical sources dating back to as early as the first half of the This Article, which have been held as authoritative by most edit for nearly 2 millennia.
The benefit of historical immediacy, as argued by Q hypothesis is one of the key determinants of historicity, and the church father Papias is a very early source in regard to testimony that the Matthew wrote his gospel first.
Nonetheless, because the Augustinian hypothesis does not address whether Peter was alive at the time of the composition of Mark or not, this discrepancy is not a basis for objection to the theory.

Farrer hypothesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The theory is that the Gospel of Mark was written first, followed by the Gospel of Matthew and then by the Gospel of Luke.
The Farrer theory has the advantage of simplicity, as there is no need for hypothetical sources to be created by academics.
Instead, advocates of the Farrer theory argue, the Gospel of Mark was used as source material by the author of Matthew.

 Synoptic problem
The Farrer hypothesis[?] posits that Mark was written first and Matthew used Mark, but that Luke used both, thus dispensing with Q. The Griesbach hypothesis[?] holds that Matthew was written first, and Luke used it in preparing his gospel.
The Augustinian hypothesis[?] holds that Matthew was written first, then Mark, then Luke, and each Evangelist depended on those who preceded him.
This lends strength to the Griesbach Hypothesis [scenario b(4)], but that support is weakened by Tuckett's mathematical observation that the relatively rare deviations of either Matthew or Luke from Mark's order means that this observation is not statistically significant.

Farrer did not advocate a complete repeal of the nineteenth century, as William R. Farmer and others have done by their revival of the Griesbach hypothesis, the dominant theory of Synoptic relationships from ca.
Farrer's response to Schmidt: “[T]he more we examine St Mark, the more his sentences are seen to flow away into the continuous process of his thought, and to bear the stamp of having been composed for the place in which they stand.
In this Farrer finds common ground with those scholars for whom the Synoptic problem is a trial to be endured periodically at the hands of enthusiasts rather than a topic of genuine interest, and discussion of same more a visit to the dentist than a day at the races.

gospel - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
Many solutions to the synoptic problem have been proposed, but the dominant view is that Mark is the first Gospel, with Matthew and Luke borrowing passages both from that Gospel and from another, lost source, known as Q.
Another theory which addresses the synoptic problem is the Farrer hypothesis.
This theory maintains Markan priority (that Mark was written first) and dispenses with the need for a theoretical document Q. What Austin Farrer has argued is that Luke used Matthew as a source as well as Mark, explaining the similarities between them without having to refer to a hypothetical document.

But at this point Farrer comes to one of the powerful arguments against Q: the so-called "minor agreements of Matthew and Luke against Mark." The prima facie case here is against any view other than that either Matthew or Luke had a copy of the other before him.
Half of Farrer's essay is devoted to an examination of Luke in some detail, referring back frequently to Matthew and to the plausibility attaching to the possibility that Matthew lay before Luke while he composed his Gospel (66-82, §§iii and iv).
One of the tests of any hypothesis of sources of the Gospels must be the writing of a commentary on the text in terms of that hypothesis.

 Synoptic Problem FAQ
About a hundred years ago, the case for the Markan priority hypothesis was thought to rest as a consequence of the observation that Mark is the middle term between Matthew and Luke.
The case for Q rests on the independence of Matthew and Luke and is framed in terms of the failure to prove that Luke is dependent upon Matthew (or vice versa).
The minor agreements are generally handled in the 2SH by a combination of reasons how Matthew and Luke could have independently arrived at their anti-Markan agreements, such as coincindental redaction, overlaps with Q or oral traditions, and textual corruption.

Two-source hypothesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to the two-source hypothesis: The sources for Matthew and Luke are the Gospel of Mark and the Q document.
The Two-Source Hypothesis is the most commonly accepted solution to the synoptic problem among biblical scholars, which posits that there are two sources to Gospel of Matthew and Gospel of Luke: the Gospel of Mark and a lost, hypothetical sayings collection called Q.
Through the remainder of the 20th century there were various challenges and refinements of Streeter's hypothesis, such as Pierson Parker (1953) who posited an early version of Matthew (proto-Matthew) as the primary source of both Matthew and Mark, and Q source used by Matthew.

The richness of Farrer's language and the ease with which he writes are not untypical of scholarship of yore, and a curse and damnation placed upon the scholarly writing of today.
If two decades or more after Farrer's death, proponents of Q (and Thomas) finally produced tangible evidence to support a century and a half old hypothesis of a synoptic sayings source, Farrer himself cannot be faulted for not recognizing the existence of such.
A stronger parry of Farrer's thrust is to deny the premise.

We might have a situation where there is an early, a middle, and a late text, and where each text after the first is aware only of the one directly preceding it.
Any of the three texts might be A, and once A is chosen, the only unknown is which of the remaining two shall be B. The total of theories of this type is thus six.
This type differs from the previous one in that each is assumed to be aware of all its precursors.

The evidence is best explained on the hypothesis that Mark was the first of the synoptics and was written shortly after the First Jewish Revolt when expectations of the imminent parousia were very strong.
When all these considerations are taken together, the idea that Matthew and Luke added their materials to the Gospel of Mark is seen to be a much better answer to the synoptic problem than the idea that Mark produced an abridgment of Matthew or of the other two.

The two-source hypothesis states that Matthew and Luke independently copied Mark for its narrative framework and independently added discourse material from a non-extant sayings collection called Q. The Griesbach hypothesis holds that Matthew was written first, and Luke used it in preparing his gospel.
