		The George IV farthing was produced in two types, between 1821 and 1823, 1825, and 1826 it weighed 4.5 – 4.8 grams, with a diameter of 22 millimetres, and from 1826–1830 it weighed 4.6 – 4.9 grams with a diameter of 22 millimetres.

		As the 1401 farthings began to run low, we decided a new farthing coin was needed, and since the coin is small (about 10mm diameter and weighing about 0.6 gram) we tried an experiment to see if four farthings could be struck on a die with a single blow of the press.
		Farthings have been struck in copper and brass, and special silver farthings equivalent to a penny have been made espcially for gifts and jewelry purposes as in charm bracelets and the like.
		A large denomination coin was needed for the purposes of business transactions, and with the quarter-crown piece running short a new die for a half-crown coin struck in 1/4 troy ounce (8 grams) of gold was prepared, featuring a chestnut tree in full leaf alone on the obverse.

		These coins were produced by the interesting technique of rolling a strip of copper between two rollers with the designs set into them, and at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge there is a strip of several of these coins which had not been cut out of the strip.
		The 'issued' coins had the reverse in 'coin' orientation, where it is inverted relative to the front, but proofs in 'medal' orientation are known (image courtesy of Spink).
		The last farthing was minted in 1956, and the coin was finally demonetized at the end of 1960.

		Follis - A coin introduced during the monetary reforms of Diocletian in 296. It was of bronze with a light wash of silver. It was discontinued in about 325. Also the name of a bronze coin used in the Byzantine Empire.

		The higher value coins (6d up when I was a boy although when I was small they still had silver 3d pieces) were called "silver" but after about 1920 they were greatly debased with up to 50% of other metal and in 1947 silver was relaced with cupro-nickel.
		However the name was preserved in the half-crown coin worth 2s 6d (an eighth of a pound) which was the highest value coin when I was a boy.
		I have a third farthing and a half farthing coin from Victorian times but I have been told these were for use in some of our overseas possessions.
