Fasciculation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A fasciculation (or "muscle twitch") is a small, local, involuntary muscle contraction (twitching) visible under the skin arising from the spontaneous discharge of a bundle of skeletal muscle fibres.
Fasciculations have a variety of causes, the majority of which are benign.
Fasciculation also often occurs during a rest period after sustained stress, such as that brought on by unconsciously tense muscles.

Benign fasciculation syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Benign fasciculation syndrome (BFS) is a neurological disorder characterized by fasciculation of various voluntary muscles in the body.
Since it is anxiety, not fasciculations, that brings patients to physicians, the association of BFS and anxiety is probably an example of ascertainment bias.
Some degree of control of the fasciculations may be achieved with the same medication used to treat essential tremor (beta-blockers and anti-seizure drugs).

 AboutBFS.com - Featured Article
Fasciculation was typically identified by the patient as a brief, painless twitch of a part of a muscle.
Fasciculations were rarely observed by the neurologist, even when the patient reported their presence and they were present via EMG.
Because an occasional fasciculation may be observed in a normal and asymptomatic individual, this judgment of excessive fasciculation was the subjective interpretation of the electromyographer.

AboutBFS.com - Frequently Asked Questions: General Questions about Benign Fasciculation Syndrome
Common symptoms of BFS are frequent muscle twitches (fasciculations or fascics), generalized fatigue, "pins and needles" sensations, migrating numbness, muscle cramping and/or spasms in the affected areas (usually the feet and calves), muscle aches and stiffness exercise intolerance, headaches, and itchiness.
Fasciculations, or fascics are localized twitches of the muscle fibers.
Fasciculations themselves can be present for years and not associated with a malignant condition.

Benign fasciculation syndrome - symptoms of benign fasciculation syndrome
Benign fasciculation syndrome (BFS) is a disorder characterized by fasciculation (localized, uncoordinated twitching) of various voluntary muscles in the body.
No benign fasciculation syndrome rigorous study of the frequency of benign fasciculation syndrome has been done, but estimates are that it affects about one in every 200 adults to one degree or another.
Some degree of control of the fasciculations may be achieved with the same drugs used to treat essential tremor -- beta-blockers and anti-seizure drugs.

 ALS
I know that fasciculations in ALS are due to nerve irritation (the same as in benign fasciculations?)- However in one of the posts it was said that fasciculations are due to ongoing reinnervation (the ones seen in EMG) are there two types of fasciculations in als??
About the fasciculation, it is characteristically present in ALS but it is not the only condition they are present in.
This contraction fasciculation is merely a motor unit contraction visible underneath skin seen initially during a slight voluntary muscle effort.

 SOME SPECIFIC FASCICULATION QUESTIONS
Fasciculations caused by ALS are due to dying muscle tissue (actually necrotic).
Fasciculations can be seen in a number of diseases, such as nemaline rod myopathy.
Since muscle is not dying in benign fasciculations, they tend to be spread out and in a variety of muscle groups.

 Medical Dictionary: Fasciculation - WrongDiagnosis.com
Fasciculation: Involuntary contraction of the muscle fibers innervated by a motor unit.
Fasciculations can often by visualized and take the form of a muscle twitch or dimpling under the skin, but usually do not generate sufficient force to move a limb.
Fasciculation: Another name for Fasciculations (or close medical condition association).

Inadequate magnesium intake can cause fasciculations, especially after a magnesium loss due to severe diarrhea (diarrhoea).
Very few laboratories in the world can test for ionized magnesium, and, since fasciculation is usually a relatively benign condition, such testing is probably not be cost justified.

Usually calf fasciculations and cramps tend to be benign.
An EMG however would be a very good idea because it may explore whether or not you have fasciculations (that you are not aware of) in other muscles.
In the work-up for ALS there are many other signs and symptoms than fasciculations that lead to a diagnosis; so a good EMG and and a good neurological work-up are of the utmost importance before making a diagnosis.

Spontaneous discharges of single motor neurons may arise due to irritability of the nerve cell at any point from the nerve cell body to the presynaptic terminals (points I-III in figure).
This causes the motor unit to fire spontaneously, termed fasciculation, which the EMG can detect easily.
The associated muscular movements are visible through the skin because all the muscle fibers in the motor unit are contracting in synchrony.

I am advised that I have a condition called fasciculation; I do not understand what this is. My symptoms are a twitching -jumping beneath the skin, which appears to travel all over my body.
It is important to seek advice from your GP to check whether it is something that requires further investigation or not.
Fasciculation is, as you describe it, a fine twitching of the muscle fibres under the skin.

 Phosphorylation-Dependent Regulation of Axon Fasciculation -- Cervello et al. 88 (23): 10548 -- Proceedings of the ...
Results obtained with chicken retinal explants in culture indicate that fasciculation is highly sensitive to cytoplasmic protein phosphorylation by means of a mechanism that does not alter levels of CAM expression.
Moreover, the potent effect of individual Fabs on fasciculation disappears with enhanced phosphorylation.
These observations suggest that growing axons possess a general regulatory process for the multiple CAMs that participate in fasciculation.

AllRefer Health - Muscle Cramps (Cramps - Muscle)
Muscle cramps are involuntary and often painful contractions of the muscles which produce a hard, bulging muscle.
Muscle twitching (fasciculation) is the result of spontaneous local muscle contractions that are involuntary and typically only affect individual muscle groups connected to (innervated by) a particular motor neuron.
Ordinary muscle cramps are common and may be stopped by stretching the affected muscle.

Muscle twitching and cramp variants of nerve hyperexcitability
Peripheral nerve hyperexcitablity (PNH) is a generalised term that is used to cover a spectrum of disorders that exhibit the symptoms of continuous involuntary muscle fiber activity Over the years a variety of names have been used to describe these symptoms normally based on clinical observations.
Some of these descriptive terms include neuromyotonia (NMT), cramp fasciculation syndrome (CFS), benign fasciculation syndrome (BFS), benign cramp fasciculation syndrome (BCFS), continuous muscle fiber activity, continuous motor nerve discharges, Isaacs syndrome, and undulating or generalised myokymia.
Research based evidence indicates an autoimmune defect in the form of a potassium channelopathy as the likely cause of PNH.
