All her dolls had fashions but, in my opinion, not until she created the Cissy doll in the mid 1950's, did we have the first true modern fashion doll.
I personally choose Cissy as the first modern fashion doll because she was the first plastic doll to imitate an adult not only in the style of the clothing that she wore but also in the actual sculpting of the doll.
The Darcy doll by Kenner was a very high quality fashion doll with an extensive wardrobe that reflected her time in the 1970's.

The exclusive Dreamgirls Fashion Dolls are crafted of high quality vinyl and hard plastic, and have multiple articulated joints for unlimited posing possibilities.
In early 2007, the line will expand to include a three doll set of The Dreams, representing the trio as an independent group at the height of their career, and specially designed clothing inspired by the film's costumes.
Each Dreamgirls Fashion Doll embodies the story's characters as opposed to any specific actor, and, like Tonner's 2003 Chicago Fashion Doll Collection, licensed from the award-winning film, the dolls use existing Tonner head sculpts without specifically portraying the individual actors' likenesses.

McMahon designs for all the 15" and 16" fashion dolls, and has various dolls modeling various costumes, with some astute judgment (I mean, Madra would just have to be Wallis Simpson).
She cautions readers in the intro that, although all the costumes can be made for all the popular dolls, if you want to make a costume for one doll that is modeled by another, you must be very careful to cut extra margin, and to fit it on your own doll.
But then she doesn't indicate which doll is modeling a particular costume, and it can be hard to guess, in particular in the case of dolls that seem to have been custom painted.

The talented artists and re-painters in the field of dolls are creating a more edgy look for the collector's market, and so, too, are designers like Doris Mixon of Fashion Boulevard and Jason Wu, both of whom see the need for casual, but cool, sportswear as well as red carpet gowns for our fashion dolls.
