history of Faslane and Coulport   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Faslane was a beautiful bay with a stream winding down to the sea - with whin bushes and gorse on the hillside.
Faslane was used as a naval base during the second world war and the bay was turned into a huge marshalling yard to serve the military port.
After the war, Faslane was used as a shipbreaking yard, dismantling amongst others the battleship HMS Vanguard which had been built at great cost at the end of the war.

Protesters danced to hearty drumbeats or lay down on the road at Faslane's two main gates, while at the oil depot a man perched himself atop the 10-foot (three-metre) fence before he eventually came down and was arrested for "breaching the peace," police said.
