Fast-roping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fast-roping is a technique for descending down a thick rope.
Several people can slide down the same rope simultaneously provided that there is a gap of 3 metres or so between them, so that each one has time to get out of the way when they reach the ground before the next person lands on them.
It is quicker than abseiling/rapelling, although more dangerous particularly if the person is carrying a heavy load because the rope is not attached to them with a descender.

The steer roping event (old timers know it a steer triping)is also done hard and fast.
Tying hard and fast means that the rope was actually tied to the horn prior to throwing the loop.

Most of the time when you call fast count (even when it isn't about stallone) people don't know what to do and they just kind of pause and keep counting, so you usually have to call it a second time, which is a check.
So, I tried calling "fast count" when people did this, and even after a discussion about what was happening, people usually refuse to change their style.

Cowboy Poetry - Experiment, Roping Terminology
Hard and fast ropers sometimes say, “If it’s worth catching it’s worth keeping,” referring to the fact that the roper can’t turn the rope loose when there is some type of trouble.
However, with this type of roping a cowboy/girl might get a wild ride because the rope the animal is caught with is “tied on” to the roper’s saddle horn.
DALLY: Dally roping is a style of roping in which the roper throws a half hitch of rope around the saddle horn after a catch is made.
