Faster-than-light - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In special relativity, while it is impossible to accelerate an object to the speed of light, or for a massive object to move at the speed of light, it is not impossible for an object to exist which always moves faster than light.
It is also possible for two objects to move faster than light relative to each other, but only from the point of view of an observer in a third frame of reference, who naively adds velocities according to Galilean relativity.
Light itself will travel at a speed slower than c when not in a vacuum (causing refraction), and in certain materials other particles can travel faster than that speed (but still slower than c), leading to Cherenkov radiation.

 Faster Than Light
On page 59, Nick lists 14 "things" that go faster than light--including comet tails and the subjective velocity of a space traveller in a near-lightspeed ship--but none of these apparently superluminal "things" can be used to send signals so they are immune from the COP rule.
At Warp 6, travel time to the nearest star (4 light-years distant) is about a week.
FTL reveals the fundamental postulate that lies behind the Einstein speed limit--the so-called Causal Ordering Principle (COP) that requires all causal processes (such as signals) to have the same time direction for all observers.

However, it is meaningless to say that the universe is expanding faster than light because the rate of the expansion is measured by Hubble's constant alone which does not even have the units of speed.
Information is better but tricky to define and sending information faster than light is really just FTL communication not FTL travel.

While the group velocity of the signal must travel at a velocity less than the speed of light, it would be perfectly acceptable for phase velocity of the signal to travel faster.
In WAY overly simplistic terms: in much the same way you're allowed to drive faster in Montana than Illinois, light, some physicists say, moves at different rates in different parts of the universe.

At first, it might seem that since the photon tunnels faster than light she would see the light before a signal traveling at the theoretical speed limit could have reached her, in violation of the Einsteinian view of causality.
Astonishingly, no, because there is no way to use the correlations between particles to send a signal faster than light.
Photons are the elementary particles from which all light is made; a typical light bulb emits more than 100 billion such particles in one billionth of a second.

ScienceDaily: Light That Travels ... Faster Than Light!
They were able not only to slow light down by a factor of three from its well -- established speed c of 300 million meters per second in a vacuum, but they've also accomplished the considerable feat of speeding it up -- making light go faster than the speed of light.
Using their Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) method, the group was able to slow a light signal down by a factor of 3.6, creating a sort of temporary "optical memory." They were also able to create extreme conditions in which the light signal travelled faster than 300 million meters a second.

In the NEC experiment, a light pulse was passed through a cell filled with a gas of caesium atoms, in which a region of "anomalous dispersion" was created using laser beams.
The experiment exploited the fact that a pulse of light of finite duration is necessarily the sum of an infinite number of waves of different frequencies.

The way they set up it up caused a pulse to be generated on the output of their apparatus that was similar to the one generated at the input and the timing of the pulses gave the appearance that a pulse moved faster than the speed of light.

Tachyons are particles that always travel faster than the speed of light.
Benford: I became fascinated by this because of the theories which purported to give field solutions for faster than light particles, tachyons, so that, after the reported discovery of tachyons, in 1972, I began to mull over what would happen to the world, and the whole scientific enterprise, if tachyons proved to exist.

 Space Age: Faster than light?
There is nowhere on the diagram to place the world-line of anybody travelling "faster than light" relative to yourself: all such lines are spacelike lines, not timelike ones.
This is because in Relativity physics the phrase "faster than light" has no more meaning than the phrase "slower than stopped".

 Literature on Faster-than-light tunneling experiments
This violation of causality is very worrysome, and thus special relativity's demand that neither matter nor information should move faster than light is a pretty fundamental one, not at all comparable to the objections some physicists had about faster-than-sound travel in the first half of this century.
The first problem with this naive conclusion is that, while in special relativity neither information nor energy are allowed to be transmitted faster than light, but that certain velocities in connection with the phenomena of wave transmission may well excede light speed.
In recent years, some physicists have conducted experiments in which faster-than-light (FTL) speeds were measured.
