The Fastnet race is a yachting race in the United Kingdom.
The race was part of the Admiral's Cup racing series from 1957 to 1999.
The 2005 race is sponsored by Rolex and is organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club with the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Royal Western Yacht Club, Plymouth.

The yachts rounded the Isle of Wight either eastwards or westwards, according to the state of the tide in the early Fastnet races and the Scillies and the Fastnet Rock could be rounded in either direction for many years.
Since this time the legendary Fastnet race has gone from strength to strength with improved communications and safety regulations in force, the race is considered a supreme challenge to ocean racing yachtsmen in British waters.
The Fastnet race now retains its place in the racing calendar immediately after Skandia Life Cowes Week and is open to all but does not form part of the programme for the Admiral's Cup.

 Fastnet Race - be part of the crew
The satisfaction is due to finishing the race and the excitement is often related to the imminent visit to the pub.
Race training weekends preferably start on Friday evenings but at times this can be difficult to manage, so if you cannot make the Friday evening then I ask people to try and get there for 10am Saturday.
Race starts at 1000 but without any doubt you need to be at the boat preferably by mid day on Saturday to help prepare the boat and then we can go for a beer or two and a nice meal at a restaurant or if the weather is right a cracking BBQ.

Martin (Commander Evelyn George Martin RNR OBE) in 1923 she was refitted and won the first Fastnet race from seven starters in August 1925.
Bobby Somerset, a founder member of the Ocean Racing Club - as was Martin, purchased her in 1928.
After competing in the Fastnet, Bermuda and Santander races he sold her four years later to Lt. John Gage RNR.

This year there were essentially two different races: one out to the Rock in strong winds, mostly on the beam, and back, in dying winds which made it very tough on the smaller boats who got to the Rock late...
Over the several days of the race, there is likely to be significant variation in the wind experienced by a boat at any given location, and obviously there will be many tidal cycles.
At this point the wind has lightened considerably to the north of the route, which was anticipated by the router and occasioned the earlier move to the west.

NIRVANA'S 1985 record for the fastest monohull in the Fastnet Race has proven remarkably resilient in the biannual ocean-racing classic but it was eclipsed overnight on Monday by another American maxi, George Coumantaros' Boomerang.
It was a fast Fastnet Race and the Maxi-One-Designs displayed just how fast it could be by decimating the monohull course record, set by Marvin Green's 80 foot Nirvana by 7 hours 32 minutes and 2 seconds.
The double points counting Fastnet Race began on Saturday evening from Cowes in near calm conditions and was almost certainly won and lost in the way in which the boats went out of the Solent and into the English Channel.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club is pleased to announce that ‘Yacht of the Year 2005’ has been awarded to the Ker 55 ‘Aera’ owned by Nick Lykiardopulo.

The 2005-2006 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will be the fifth time BEKKING will have competed in the Ocean Race and he also counts winning the Sydney-Hobart race as one of his many sailing achievements.
