Fatemeh Javadi was appointed as Vice-President and Head of the Environment Protection Organization, state radio said.
Ahmadinejad has been accused of being a hardliner, but Javadi's appointment means that he is following the footsteps of his predecessor, President Mohammad Khatami, a reformist who appointed a woman as vice-president in his two presidential terms.
Javadi holds a doctorate in geology and is currently teaching at the University of Shiraz in southern Iran.

Javadi suggested that the UN Human Settlement Program set an agenda for ecotourism in the United Nations Environmental Programs (UNEP) seminar which is going to be held in February 2006 in United Arab Emirates.

Last week, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad named paleontologist Fatemeh Javadi as one of nine new vice presidents in his cabinet.
(Last month, mathematician Mohammad-Mehdi Zahedi was named science minister.) Some observers view the appointment of Javadi, a professor at the University of Shiraz, as an encouraging sign that Ahmadinejad's conservative views may not block progress by Iranian women in the scientific workforce.
Javadi's main responsibility is to oversee the state Environmental Protection Organization.

TEHRAN: Iran’s new hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has appointed a woman to be one of his nine vice presidents and as head of the Islamic Republic’s Environmental Protection Organisation, official media said yesterday.
Fatemeh Javadi, a paleontologist currently teaching at the University of Shiraz, is likely to be the only female in the cabinet and takes over from Massoumeh Ebtekar, who was the only woman in the cabinet of ex-president Mohammad Khatami.
In total Ahmadinejad is expected to appoint nine vice presidents, including one first vice president.
