Flag of Iran - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Nadir Shah, the founder of Afshari dynasty and a self-styled ruler who salvaged Iran from a feudalistic state to form a unified country, made giant military advances toward India and China (on the eastern frontier), Khwarizm and Samarkand (located on the northern part of Iran), and Kirkuk and Bagdad in today’s Iraq.
Out of personal vendetta with Nadir Shah whom he had fought against, he ordered the established colors be removed and replaced with a solid red color as the background and a white circle in the middle with the sun and the lion.
The flag he introduced was similar to that of the diplomatic flag of Fath Ali Shah except it was a tricolour and rectangular as opposed to triangular.

Shah Abbas I (r.1588-1629) was the Safavi king who replaced the power of the Qizilbash with a standing army equipped with gun-powder weapons.
To continue the reforms any Qajar ruler had to bring the tribes to their kneel, silence the ulama and create a strong centralized administration [something that Mohammad Ali Pasha and Ottoman reformists did in Egypt and the Ottoman empire and which was finally achieved under Reza Shah Pahlavi 1925-1941].
Hence the Qajar state was ultimately a weak one; after direct foreign threat subsided, it did not even have a strong army and ruled by playing one faction (tribe; group) against the other.

Sotheby's Fath Ali Shah signed by Ahmad, Persia, dated A.H.1226/A.D.1811
His recorded works include two watercolours, one a portrait of Fath Ali Shah, the other a portrait of Muhammad Shah (thus pointing to the fact that the artist's carreer extended to the reign of Muhammad Shah).
He is refered to as follows 'Among the second generation of court painters, active towards the end of Fath Ali Shah's reign and during that of his grandson and successor Muhammad Shah, the best was probably Ahmad who, to judge from his early style, may well have been a pupil of Mihr Ali'.
Indeed, the present work can be compared to two large oil paintings of Fath Ali Shah standing by Mihr Ali, dating from just before and just after this watercolour (1809-10 and 1813 respectively) (see Diba and Ekhtiar 1998, p.183, no.39; and Falk 1972, no.15).
