deseretnews.com - Movie review: Father of the Bride | Deseret Morning News Web edition
But with "Father of the Bride," director Charles Shyer and his co-writing/producing partner Nancy Meyers have managed to bring the story of the 1950 film into the '90s, remain faithful to the source material and still make an up-to-date, warm comedy.
But there's inspired casting in Steve Martin as the father, giving the material a comic edge and demonstrating his maturity as an actor as he confronts the age-old problem of letting go when his daughter announces she is going to be married.
"Father of the Bride" is very much a family film, with only a single vulgar remark accounting for the PG rating.

While Father of the Bride is consistently entertaining, there's no denying that certain sections of the film are far more effective than others (which doesn't come as much of a surprise, given the relatively plotless nature of the proceedings).
Father of the Bride is a charming, engaging little movie that's elevated by some top-notch acting and a few genuinely heartwarming moments.

 Patrick Stewart - Film Work
Filmed largely in Ireland amongst the mud and mist, Boorman's film is a treat to look at and is well worth seeking out either on video or the occasional TV run.
The film is a visually stunning adaptation of Frank Herbert's cult sci-fi novel, with a fine cast of leading UK and European actors and a haunting soundtrack, but ultimately it never quite succeeds in fully capturing the scope of the book.
Filmed in Vancouver, the film was something of a departure from the more intense roles of the past for Patrick, and it is clearly apparent he has a lot of fun with the role of the villain here.
