Father of the Bride (1991)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
For any father who loves his daughter, this movie simply can't be watched without feeling a tearing at the heart and a lump in the throat.
This is a tough time for many fathers, and mothers and daughters very often don't understand their erratic, paranoid and irrational behaviour.
Father of The Bride explores this phenomenon with what was for me an amazingly accurate depiction of the emotional turmoil that goes on in the head of a man who cherishes his daughter's love and feels threatened and reduntant when another man enters the picture.

But with "Father of the Bride," director Charles Shyer and his co-writing/producing partner Nancy Meyers have managed to bring the story of the 1950 film into the '90s, remain faithful to the source material and still make an up-to-date, warm comedy.
But there's inspired casting in Steve Martin as the father, giving the material a comic edge and demonstrating his maturity as an actor as he confronts the age-old problem of letting go when his daughter announces she is going to be married.
"Father of the Bride" is very much a family film, with only a single vulgar remark accounting for the PG rating.

Unsurprisingly, Martin is adept at conveying the angst of middle-age male crisis, but the film doesn't develop his anxiety much beyond George high-tailing it to the gym--he's not really out of shape, for that matter--and the barbershop for a dye job.
Indeed, it is this transaction that blemishes "Father of the Bride Part II" as an otherwise innocuous fantasy of upper-middle-class American life.

And there's no real reason for updating it to the 90's except as a way to spoon-feed us the blandness of that era that Republicans claim was the best time America had.

Father of the Bride is a well-made light comedy, enhanced by a radiant performance from Elizabeth Taylor and Spencer Tracy at his subtle, comic best.
If not as opulent as MGM films of the Irving Thalberg era, Father of the Bride nonetheless represents the type of high-quality studio film often produced in the post-WWII era.
It was a huge financial success, and it is sometimes cited as evidence that the reputation of director Vincente Minnelli has come to center too much on his musicals and not enough on his broader work, such as this comedy.
