Fatih Akin (right) with "Head-On" stars Birol Unel (left) and Sibel Kekilli (center) at the 2004 Berlin, where the film won the Golden Bear.
Fatih Akin's "Head-On" is an energetic blast of extreme situations -- it has laughs and tears, goth songs by The Sisters of Mercy alongside Turkish traditionals, the hip bars of Hamburg and the dusty cafes of Istanbul, and -- of course -- love and hate.
Akin: I have two scripts, one I hope to shoot this year is called "Soul Kitchen," it's about a restaurant in the area of Hamburg where I live.

Fatih Akin, asked how close the story of "Head On" was to his own life, gave this answer: It was a story he had to squeeze out like a pimple after years of festering.
Where Karmakar is a man of intellect and thorough deliberation, Akin completely, almost blindly trusts in his story, his actors and the powers conjured up by their energy and interaction.
Akin does not have very much of a deliberate concept, it all seems done by intuition, every single picture of it.

Fatih Akin was born in Hamburg in 1973, and lives and works in the city's Altona district, the setting for several of his films.

Nonetheless, this love story beginning in a psychiatric institution and ending on the Bosphorus, is - or so Akin believes - evidence of an important development in his stories: «I have become wiser, somehow, and part of that is that the heroes of this film don't die.

SPLICEDwire | "Head-On (Gegen die Wand)" movie review (2005) "Head-On (Gegen die Wand)" review, Fatih Akin, Birol Unel, ...
In Fatih Akin's earlier film, "In July," the German-born writer-director took an old-fashioned road movie romance (a variation on "It Happened One Night") and gave it a craggy, sun-baked sweetness.
It's a strange effect; Akin plays on the familiar to inspire relaxation and the anticipation of something comfortable and routine, but then snatches it away and delivers something darker.
Akin's focus is always on the two characters, drawing out fully-rounded emotional centers for both.

SPLICEDwire | "In July (Im Juli)" review (2002) Fatih Akin, Moritz Bleibtreu, Christiane Paul
Writer-director Fatih Akin boldly casts Moritz Bleibtreu (Lola's boyfriend from "Run Lola Run") as his hero Daniel, a socially insecure square and a dullard of a high school physics teacher.
Alone in the middle of nowhere, Daniel tries to hitch a ride from a guy who appears to be cheap Eastern European gangster (Mehmet Kurtulus) with a dead body in his trunk, and things get more than a little complicated.
Akin demonstrates an innate flair for subtle absurdity and lunatic twists in this endlessly enjoyable movie that turns clichés on their ears with the director's oddball execution.
