Faulkner's extant papers run to thousands of pages, comprising holograph manuscripts, ribbon and carbon typescripts, corrected and uncorrected galley and page proofs, notes, foul papers, outlines, preliminary and revised drafts, all in varying combinations, for nearly every novel and short story.
Faulkner's first connection with the University had taken place in the autumn of 1931 when he attended the Southern Writer's Conference in Charlottesville under the direction of James Southall Wilson.
By the terms of the agreement by which the William Faulkner Foundation transferred the original manuscripts to the University, access to the original manuscripts is restricted (to ensure the survival of the physically-delicate originals) to doctoral candidates at the dissertation stage of their programs, and to certain mature scholars and critics.

Though Faulkner’s claim as a fledgling writer in 1921 that “[he] could write a play like Hamlet if [he] wanted to” (FAB 330) may be dismissed as an act of youthful posturing, the statement serves to indicate that from the beginning Shakespeare was the standard by which Faulkner would judge his own creativity.
Faulkner, too, drew heavily upon history for his fictional materials, incorporating into his Yoknapatawpha narratives accounts of the settlement of the South, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the racial patterns and conflicts of Jim Crow and segregation, and the displacement of an agrarian life style by mechanization and industrialization.

William Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, as the oldest of four sons of Murray Charles Faulkner and Maud (Butler) Faulkner.
Faulkner cooperated with Hawks among others in the films To Have and Have Not (1944), based freely on Ernest Hemingway's novel, and The Big Sleep (1946), based on Raymond Chandler's novel.
Faulkner did not hide his fear and contempt of the city: "Sometimes I think if I do one more treatment or screenplay, I'll lose whatever power I have as a writer," he told Carpenter.

Faulkner will begin playing intercollegiate football in the fall of 2007, school president Billy D. Hilyer announced Tuesday at a press luncheon.

Taking part in university traditions such as Mooov-In, in which administrators, faculty, staff and student leadership volunteer each year to help incoming students unload and carry their bags, boxes and belongings into campus residence halls, helped Dr. Faulkner connect with students.

In 1963, the University of Virginia purchased the property—then encompassing the mansion, nineteen acres of land and five outbuildings—for $180,000.

William Faulkner was born on September 25, 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi, a small town thirty-five miles east of Oxford.
The layout of the real Lafayette County became, in Faulkner's imagination, the basic outline of Yoknapatawpha County: the same rectangular space divided by roads, rivers, and a railroad into four quadrants, divided further by diagonal secondary roads, with Oxford/Jefferson placed in the center.
Both indicate that Faulkner is the creator of the region, either the Òsole owner and proprietorÓ or the person responsible for the surveying and mapping.

Faulkner's final Address on the State of the University on Wednesday was a mixture of encouragement, gentle criticism, guidance and farewells.
After reporting on the successes and failures of the previous year, Faulkner turned to the biggest challenges he said his successor will face: How to finance the University long-term with an increasingly tight state budget and how to deal with the Legislature.
Like other public schools, the University may have to choose between privatizing or sacrificing quality and remaining public, unless it finds a new way to finance itself, he said.
