The county came to be named after Francis Fauquier, Lt. Governor of Virginia from 1758 to his death in 1768.
The county’s most notable native is unquestionably Chief Justice John Marshall who became known as the “Great Chief Justice.” John Marshall was the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and raised the court to the position of power and prestige it is known for today.

Warrenton's former jail is a singular example of the state's early county penal architecture.
A jail was built for the county in 1779, but it proved to be inadequate within a number of years.

As part of his application and request, and to meet county open space requirements, Leinberger agreed to give the county almost 24 acres of land for the construction of a Rappahannock River Park.
That means, said senior planner Chuck Floyd, if the county wanted Leinberger's land for park development, it could take it, regardless of whether he wanted to give it.
