CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Fausto de Elhuyar y de Suvisa
At the present day when tungsten steel, known as high speed steel and self-hardening steel, is revolutionizing machine-shop practice, the work of Elhuyar is of particular interest.
He named the metal Wolfram, a name which it still retains in the German language; the name, tungsten, meaning heavy stone, is generally used in other tongues.
Elhuyar then spent three years in travelling for the purpose of study, through Central Europe and went to Mexico, then called New Spain.

Fausto (d') Elhuyar (y de Suvisa) was a Spanish chemist and mineralogist who in partnership with his brother Juan José was the first to isolate tungsten metal, or wolfram (1783), though not the first to recognize its elemental nature.
The Elhuyar brothers found the tungstic acid in the ore wolframite, and extracted the metal by reducing this acid with charcoal.
They achieved it at the Seminary of Bergara and, for the first time, the names of Basque persons would be written in annals of the history of science.

The name wolframite means "devourer of tin" and is the name given by the medieval German smelters who found that tin ores containing tungsten had a much lower yield, since the mineral interfered with the smelting of the tin by "devouring the tin like a wolf".
Pure tungsten metal was first discovered and isolated in 1783 by two Spanish chemists and brothers Juan José and Fausto Elhuyar in samples of the mineral wolframite.
Today, tungsten is primarily obtained from wolframite and scheelite using the same basic method developed by José and Elhuyar: tungsten ores are crushed, cleaned and treated with alkalis to form tungsten trioxide.

In 1783, brothers Juan José and Fausto Elhuyar ended the confusion by isolating the pure tungsten metal from samples of wolframite.
Their basic technique, now more than two centuries old, remains the primary method for producing the metal on a commercial scale.
