Les Fauves (French for wild beasts), a short-lived and loose grouping of early Modern artists, emphasized painterly qualities, and the use of deep color, over the representational values retained by Impressionism even with its focus on light and the moment.Critics also use the word Fauve to explain someone or an artist.
One of the fundamentals of the Fauves was expressed in 1888 by Paul Gauguin to Paul Sérusier,
In French, "Fauves" means "wild beasts".The painter Gustave Moreau was the movement's inspirational teacher, and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris who pushed his students to think outside of the lines of formality and to follow their visions.

 The Fauves
The name 'Fauves' caught on, becoming a term of abuse - although it had not been intended as such - and the furore that followed made the artists famous.
Fauve artists experimented with the relationship of colours to each other, applying pure, unblended colour straight from the tube so that colour mixing was achieved by the eye of the viewer and not on the palette.
Fauve painting, standing as it did on the threshold of two centuries, unlocked the door between representation or pictorial illusion and abstraction or art for art's sake - "not everything, but the foundation of everything" as Matisse believed.

"Fauve Nude" is a pivotal work for Maurer as it reveals the artist's unequivocal abandonment of his earlier style of painting in the vein of William Merritt Chase and James Abbott McNeill Whistler for the expressive and primal syntax of Matisse.
Considered one of the most significant works in the exhibition, it is a watershed painting by one of the first American artists to effect drastic change in his aesthetic as a result of head-on exposure to Matisse's art.
Rice's interest in Fauve painter Andre Derain is exemplified in the work entitled "Ajaccio, Corse." Her passionate reaction to the Corsican countryside is reflected in the rhythmic form and brilliant, jewel-like patterning of color, which garnered her strong, critical acclaim by both the British and French press.

The leader of the Fauves was Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954).
Although more known as a pioneer of Cubism, Braque was exploring the Fauves' nonnaturalistic uses of color during the period that he and Picasso were making the first experiments in Cubism -- 1906-1910.

my sense is that the fauves, and many other artists of the time, had rejected representation as a standard or starting point, and treated it instead as a kind of context for rhetoric and a source of symbolism.

The Fauves in all their variations were an enormous influence: most of all because once seen, the aspirant knew what could be done, and how it might best be done.
A few Americans kept the Fauves' faith, instead made their own work that was no longer wild, but tamed by practice and by the times by a special vision or other influences.

(The Fauve movement was typified by the works of Henri Matisse and characterized by vivid color, free treatment of form, and a resulting vibrant and decorative effect.) This painting is possibly Dufy's first attempt to utilize a style that attempted to show his "reality," rather than just the surface of a subject.
Dufy did not exhibit with Matisse and his group of Fauves at that first show, but he was excited by their creative use of color and drawing.

From 1904, the Fauve artists, including Henri Matisse (1869-1954) with André Derain (1880-1954), Henri Manguin (1874-1949) and Maurice Vlaminck (1876-1958), began to portray familiar objects with “unfamiliar” colors.
Moreover, the fragmented way that they were applied — in larger and smaller blocks — made the pictures seem sketchy, clumsy and unfinished to their contemporary audience.
The subject matter of the Fauve painting is often traditional.

Fauvism, French Fauvisme, is a style of painting that flourished in France from 1898 to 1908.
The painters, Fauves, used pure, brilliant colour, applied straight from the paint tubes in an aggressive, direct manner to create a sense of an explosion on the canvas.
One of these visitors was the critic Louis Vauxcelles, who, because of the violence of their works, dubbed the painters "Les Fauves" (Wild Beasts).
