Fawkner is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Fawkner could be described as a family suburb with about 60 per cent of house ownership.
The opening of the Upfield railway line on 8th October 1889 (electrified to Fawkner on 2nd December 1920); and the development of the Fawkner general cemetery encouraged residential development in the area.

The earliest buildings at Victoria Barracks were built by soldiers in the late 1850s, with the original bluestone buildings being constructed between 1856 and 1872.
Victoria Barracks was the administrative headquarters for the Australian Army but to ensure the close coordination of the three services necessary to the war effort, the Barracks also became the administrative headquarters of the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force.
The head of Air Raid Precautions, Mr Carrodus, established flout practices in December 1941, however on one occasion the Prime Minister and Defence Secretariat staff were forced to stay late with the lights doused because the flout curtains proved inadequate.

It was a period of great importance for Victoria which saw the transition from a colony depending principally on the pastoral industry and gold-mining, to one in which agriculture and manufacturing were to be even more important.

The visit of the Australian premiers to England on the occasion of Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee gave an additional impetus to federation, and in September 1897 the convention reassembled in Sydney and discussed the modifications in the constitution which had been suggested in the local parliaments.
Those of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania agreed to the measure; but the majority in New South Wales, 5458, was not sufficient to carry the bill.

Fawkner is watered by a number of creeks, including Merri and Edgars, which feed into the Lake Reservoir.
Fawker, in fact, hosts Australia's largest 'single cemetery entity.' The Fawkner Crematorium and Memorial Park extends over 297ha which are landscaped with manicured lawns, fragrant rose gardens, fountains, lakes and ponds.
The park is still served by a railway station which, from 1906 to 1939, was the terminus for special trains made up of one first class and two second class carriages, a guard's van and a 'mortuary carriage' carrying the deceased and mourners from Melbourne.
