Talking Heads - Fear Of Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
By titling their third album, Fear of Music and opening it with the African rhythmic experiment "I Zimbra," complete with nonsense lyrics by poet Hugo Ball, Talking Heads made the record seem more of a departure than it was.
Though Fear of Music was musically distinct from its predecessors, mostly because of the use of minor keys that gave the music a more ominous sound.
What kept Fear of Music from being as impressive an album as Talking Heads' first two was that much of it seemed to repeat those earlier efforts, while the few newer elements seemed so risky and exciting.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Church Music
Whenever music, instead of assuming a character of independence and mere ornament, acts as an auxiliary to the other means of promoting the worship of God and as an incentive to good, it not only does not interfere with the religious ceremony, but, on the contrary, imparts to it the greatest splendour and effectiveness.
The object of the society is to cultivate the chant, polyphony, hymns in the vernacular, organ-playing, and orchestral music in conformity with the regulations of the Church.
The secular and semi-ecclesiastical or simply religious music of the Middle Ages had a decisive influence in the transformation of polyphonic music into the harmonic or homophonic, and a comparison between the various styles is a great aid in determining the character of genuine church music.

The music of Fear Cult ("I just pulled the name out of my butt," says Matt) is cold and sterile - it paints a picture of a world devoid of light - as the man-machine tried to grapple with the concept of feelings, and the ephemeral nature of life and love.
When I asked Cindy to be a part of Fear Cult it was a time when a good live venue had opened up and I was interested in doing a live sort of performance art act, rather than your traditional gig.
One thing I do like about Fear Cult is their ultra-groovy ankh-with-bat-wings, which is has been a potential tattoo on my body for several years, should I never get over the fear of going under the needle.

Somehow, though, however they did it, the band consistently made music of surpassing originality, and their seminal role in the developing new wave and post-punk scenes is now well recognised.
However, in 1979, when the band was recording Fear Of Music, all of this was still at least partly in the hazy future.
Musically, it’s much like what has come before it, with a sound which is really defined by the almost Joy Division-esque spikiness of its guitars, but, like “Memories Can’t Wait”, takes an abrupt left-turn somewhere near the end, as Byrne suddenly begin chanting again, in which mode he finishes the song.

The first single from the album was 'Life During Wartime', which used many of the conventions of funk music to undermine rock's traditional concern with partying at all costs.
The rest of the album took the sound and spirit of the first two LPs to its logical extremes, and track for track 'Fear Of Music' was as strong as anything the band have recorded, before or since.
