In support of this programme a vigorous agitation began, the principal leader of which was Feargus OConnor, whose irresponsible and erratic oratory produced a vast effect.
OConnor, especially, entered into a public controversy with Cobden and Bright, in which he was worsted.
Common, and their leaders, Feargus OConnor and Ernest Charles Jones, shrank from the responsibility of braving the authorities by conducting the procession to the Houses of Parliament.

 Feargus O'Connor (1794-1855)
O'Connor, Feargus 1794-1855, Chartist leader, son of Roger O'Connor of Connorville, co. Cork, and nephew of Arthur O'Connor, was born on 18 July 1794.
O'Connor was from the first the ‘constant travelling dominant leader of the movement’, and his paper was practically the official organ of Chartism.
O'Connor knew of the preparations for the Newport rising on 4 November 1839, but was absent in Ireland until a few days before the rising actually took place.

An Irish landowner and lawyer, O'Connor was elected as M.P. for Cork in 1832.
At the rally at Kennington Common on 10 April 1848 O'Connor prevented a violent confrontation by persuading the crowd to abandon the proposed procession to the Houses of Parliament.
O'Connor himself presented the petition, but the Chartist movement lost credibility when many of the signatures turned out to be fake.

Later that year, O'Connor, with the help of Daniel O'Connell, the leader of the Irish Radicals, was elected MP for County Cork in the General Election after advocating the repeal of the Act of Union, abolition of tithes, universal suffrage and the secret ballot.
O'Connor's message was particularly popular with the handloom weavers who were suffering severe economic distress in the 1830s.
O'Connor's speeches and newspaper articles became more threatening and he was blamed by the Moral Force Chartists for encouraging John Frost and the unsuccessful Newport Rising on 4th November 1839.

In the spring of 1848, Feargus O'Connor decided on a new strategy that would combine several different tactics: a large public meeting, a procession and the presentation of a petition to the House of Commons.
Feargus O'Connor warned the prime minister, Lord John Russell, that after the speeches he intended to lead the large crowd to Parliament where he would present a petition to the government.
Feargus O'Connor claimed that over 300,000 assembled at Kennington Common, but others argued that this figure was a vast exaggeration.

By searching the Free BMD website for all children born with the first names “Feargus O'Connor” or “William Lovett” it is now possible to get some idea of how common it was for mid-nineteenth century parents to do this.
The person in question was one Thomas Feargus O'Connor Bramwell, born in Mansfield, Notts (East Midlands) in 1840 and christened on 4 November 1840 in Mansfield.
You may also be interested to know that the family resided in the "Rock Houses", houses created in a sandstone ridge, in Mansfield and were possibly some of the least affluent people in the town - no doubt hence their politics.
