His most visible success came in the 1993 Oscar-nominated film Farewell My Concubine (Ba wang bie ji, 1993), in which he appeared as the transvestite Douzi, who kills himself at the film's conclusion.

Openly gay, he was fearless in his choice of roles, often playing flamboyantly gay characters at a time when Hong Kong was hardly tolerant of homosexuality.

After a disappointing reception for Fearless, a 1993 film starring Jeff Bridges as an airplane crash survivor trying to make sense out of his life, Weir rebounded strongly in 1998 with The Truman Show.
Starring Jim Carrey in his first serious role as a man trapped in a TV show about his own artificially constructed life, the film was a surreal, darkly humorous take on contemporary society's obsession with the media and celebrity.
Doing for star Robin Williams what Witness had done for Ford, the film earned Weir his second Oscar nomination, won a French Csar for Best Foreign Film, and became a stock reference point in the teen angst film lexicon.

 Biography for Peter Weir
His next film didn't appear until 1993, but it was worth the wait: Fearless was one of his strongest in years, an arresting study of a man who survives an airplane crash, and finds his life irrevocably changed by the experience.
This pseudo-mystic tale (based on a true story) of private-school girls who mysteriously disappear in the Australian outback not only established Weir as a bold new talent, but was the first film to explore the director's favorite theme, that of clashing cultures.
Weir enjoyed great commercial success with Dead Poets Society (1989), and earned his second Oscar nomination (the first was for Witness the following year he was nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar for his more commercially contrived comedy Green Card (1990).

 Peter Weir
After a disappointing reception for Fearless, a 1993 film starring Jeff Bridges as an airplane crash survivor trying to make sense out of his life, Weir rebounded strongly in 1998 with The Truman Show.
Despite strong material and an excellent cast that included Ford, Helen Mirren, and River Phoenix, the film failed to find success with either critics or audiences.
Weir took five years to follow up The Truman Show, but when the Napoleonic-era naval epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World came along in 2003, it was greeted with many rapturous reviews and earned multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and yet another Best Director nod for Weir.

Even Weir films that fail to connect (i.e., 1993's "Fearless") are worthy of examination as proof that there is still room for an auteur to make big pictures in today's Hollywood machine.
