Fearless Fosdick was a policeman who was the hero of the Li'l Abner character in Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic strip which appeared from 1934 to 1977.
Fosdick was therefore the main character of a comic strip within a comic strip.

In the summer of 1944, 1st Lt. Frank Forsyth, (also called "Fearless Fosdick" by his fellow pilots) a P-47 Thunderbolt pilot assigned to the 359th Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force, was strafing a train in either Holland or Belgium.
This is the first picture we have seen of Frank's airplane with the painting of "Fearless Fosdick" on it and it is a poor image in quality.
We do have the original sketch of the drawing (see below) but I was wondering if any of the members of the 356th Fighter Group would have a better picture of the plane with the painting on it before it crashed and hopefully with Frank in the picture as well.

I wrote a letter explaining the ship's ASW mission and asked if he would be kind enough to create such a design depicting Fearless Fosdick shooting holes through an animated submarine..just as he did his many outlaw opponents.
I left the ship before it was put on the stack...if it ever was...but am delighted to see that the artwork has survived.

The most famous character to debut in Eagle's 2000 A.D. title, the grimly humorous lawman has been featured in numerous well done stories issued by various publishers, and has inspired a wide range of collectable products, ranging from Ninetendo and pinball games, to model kits, action figures, novels, and card sets.
The character Judge Dredd, I've always felt, can trace his ancestry back to Al Capp's Fearless Fosdick; both police officers are fanatically dedicated to law enforcement to the exclusion of common sense and mercy, and to the extent than even mere jay-walkers run the risk of being shot.
Dredd is the Dirty Harry of Mega-City One, a futuristic metropolis sprawled across what's left of America's toasted East Coast.
