Feather Linux does a bit less auto-detection of hardware than most live distributions; I'm not sure if that is because the code has been trimmed out, or to allow more control of configuration by experienced Linux users.
Overall, Feather Linux is a nicely put together distribution, but it is distinctly for experienced Linux users.

This is a thoughtful touch for users not familiar with Feather Linux and includes information on how to access the internet, mounting drives, screen resolution and sound issues, the different web browsers included, saving your configuration, flash and java and man pages and documentation.
I decided to concentrate on Feather Linux however Damn Small Linux, Morphix and Slax are definitely worth a look too and and if you want to see full lists of mini Linux distros go to this page at Linux.org and look for "Minimalist" or go to Linux Links.

It is a Knoppix remaster (based on Debian), and tries to include software which most people would use every day on their desktop.
After that, it was just a case of cleaning up some remnants of the original Knoppix - I changed the boot image to show the Feather Linux bootup screen, and I also prevented /home/knoppix from being overwritten on boot.

One such mini-distribution, Feather Linux, whose creator and main developer is Rob Sullivan, is targeted at general desktop use.
The hardware detection is fantastic, the Fluxbox window manager theme is nicer (I know its only cosmetic and you can change it in DSL but first impressions are really important for newbies), you can download Open Office and Firefox if you want them and generally it just has some nice touches.
If you are looking for a lightweight Linux distro I would strongly suggest taking a look at Feather Linux.

I want to install knoppix on one partition and another Knoppix based distro called "feather linux" on a 2nd partition.
You install knoppix after feather is installed and knoppix's lilo takeover feather's lilo.....and you can boot to knoppix but not to feather.
So what I should do is re load Feather Linux first, and make a copy of its LILO.CONF.

I use KDE on as my installed desktop with PCLinuxOS and Fluxbox with my Feather Linux live cd that I carry around.
I think one of the good things about live CDs for new users is that they don't have to choose between 25 applications that do the same job.
I do think choice is good and once you have spent some time with Linux then it is a good time to look around at the different applications, however when you are first looking at Linux I think too much choice causes confusion.
