The Feather River is a principal tributary of the Sacramento River, 80 mi (129 km) long, in northern California in the United States.
The river has a rich history of gold mining in the 19th century.
The river rises in three separate forks in the Sierras which unite as arms of the Lake Oroville reservoir in the foothills 5 mi (8 km) northeast of Oroville in eastern Butte County.

The Feather River CRM was developed to encourage local initiative and participation in resource management and to coordinate requests for Federal and State technical and financial assistance.

The Feather River CRM is also seeking to build bridges and form partnerships with academia, to apply better science to restoration projects, and better understand watershed processes.

Since the Oroville Dam on the Feather River now blocks the upstream migration of adult spring and fall run chinook salmon and steelhead trout, the hatchery traps the migrating fish for artificial spawning.
Salmon and steelhead, raised at the hatchery, are released in the Feather River and in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Estuary to find their way to the Pacific Ocean where they grow and mature.
Though most of the fish spawn naturally in the river gravel beds, those that are artificially spawned at the hatchery produce offspring that have a higher survival rate.

Many Chinook (king) salmon have already returned to the Feather River, waiting for this year’s opening of the fish ladder scheduled for Sept. 15.
When the ladder opens salmon will be seen jumping in the river, entering the fish ladder, and swimming at the underwater viewing windows.
The Feather River Hatchery is in place to mitigate for the loss of spawning habitat in the Feather River and its tributaries that are blocked by Oroville Dam.
