The unemployment rate, which dropped from February's 4.8 per cent, ended up matching January's jobless rate, which was the lowest in 4 1/2 years.
On the jobs front, payroll gains in January and February turned out to be slightly less than previously reported but still suggest decent job growth.
In February, payrolls grew by 225,000, rather than the 243,000 previously reported.

The action was expected to be associated with a small increase in short-term money market interest rates.
Chairman Greenspan decided to announce this action immediately so as to avoid any misunderstanding of the Committee's purposes, given the fact that this is the first firming of reserve market conditions by the Committee since early 1989.
