	Fedchenko Glacier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Fedchenko Glacier (Russian Федченко, also transliterated Fedcenko) is a large glacier in the Pamir Mountains of central Tajikistan.
		It is named after Alexei Pavlovich Fedchenko, a Russian explorer (but not discoverer of the glacier).
		The Tajik government has recently expressed concerns that the Fedchenko and other Pamir glaciers have been shrinking due to global warming, and that continuing temperature increases could endanger that nation's water supply and extensive hydroelectric power infrastructure, both of which are driven almost entirely by glacier melt.

	Alexis Pavlovich Fedchenko - LoveToKnow 1911
		ALEXIS PAVLOVICH FEDCHENKO (1844-1873), Russian naturalist and traveller, well known for his explorations in central Asia, was born at Irkutsk, in Siberia, on the 7th of February 18 44; and, after attending the gymnasium of his native town, proceeded to the university of Moscow, for the study more especially of zoology and geology.
		In 1868 he travelled through Turkestan, the district of the lower Syr-Darya and Samarkand; and shortly after his return he set out for Khokand, where he visited a large portion of territory till then unknown.
		Accounts of the explorations and discoveries of Fedchenko have been published by the Russian government, - his Journeys in Turkestan in 1874, In the Khanat of Khokand in 1875, and Botanical Discoveries in 1876.

		The glacier is nearly 3 km wide and is rather gently sloping.

	Pamir Mountains Proposal
		I am writing to request funding from the Dan and Betty Churchill Exploration Fund for an upcoming field season to the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan as part of a reconnaissance trip for the Central Asia Deep Ice-Coring Project (CADIP).
		Paul Mayewski is collaborating with Vladimir Aizen from the University of Idaho in a plan to secure support to retrieve a 500-1000 meter ice core from Fedchenko Glacier in the Pamirs (see attached figures and site information).
		The proposed ice core will be the deepest non-polar ice core ever recovered, and will provide a climatic and environmental record covering the Holocene.
