Akure is a city in the southwestern region of Nigeria, and is the capital of Ondo state.
Rock engravings dating back to the Mesolithic period, have been discovered on the outskirts of Akure, as has the oldest Homo Sapiens fossil to have been found in West Africa to thus far, dating back to around 11,000 years ago.
In the commercial sector, Akure is the trade center for a farming region.

The award which was conferred on Governor Adamu at the combined 15th and 16th convocation of the University at the weekend was in appreciation of the Governor's contribution to the field of science education in Nasarawa state.
He said universities are established to solve societal problems and so Nigerian universities have to proffer solutions to the current unemployment problems facing Nigerian youths.
Governor Adamu for committing adequate funds to the development of the university and said that the Board of the universities commission would soon visit the governor to formally congratulate him for the feat and present a copy of the report to him.

Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) and the University of Ibadan (UI) were ranked second and third respectively.
It is a measure of the research output and standing in the area of scholarship of the staff in the university.
FUTA's School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology scored 104, followed by School of Sciences, 74; Environmental Technology, 4; Engineering and Engineering Technology, 2, while School of Mines and Earth Science also scored 2.

National Universities Com-mission (NUC) executive secretary, Professor Peter Okebukola, who disclosed this yesterday in Abuja, said that the grant was meant to support innovative activities in the universities.
Okebukola said that the grant was intended to assist the universities in the areas of administrative, curriculum and departmental reforms.
Other universities that would benefit from the US grant, Okebukola disclosed are the University of Lagos N980,000, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, N1.90 million and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, N2.34 million.

The Federal Government has released N2,785,550,773.00 to 24 federal universities and five inter-university centres for the payment of May salaries.
The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola who disclosed this in the weekly Monday Memo of the Commission said the action was in consonance with the presidential directive on payment of salaries by the 28th of every month.
The schedule of disbursement given has the University of Ibadan with N257,107,345, as the highest, followed by University of Nigeria, Nsukka with N248,895,424, Ahmadu Bello University as third with N216,116,494 and University of Lagos as fourth with N215,791,697.
