States of Germany - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany, the country's federal constitution, stipulates that the structure of each Federal State's government must "conform to the principles of republican, democratic, and social government, based on the rule of law" (Article 28[1]).
The relationship between the legislative and executive branches mirrors that in the federal system: the legislatures are popularly elected for four or five years (depending on the state), and the Minister-President is then chosen by a majority vote among the Landtag's members.
State elections are viewed as a barometer of support for the policies of the federal government.

Federal government of the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The government of the United States, established by the U.S. Constitution, is a federal republic of 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and many insular areas, the largest of which are Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam.
The laws of the United States are contained in federal legislation, collected in the U.S. Code; regulations adopted by administrative agencies empowered to do so by legislation; and judicial and agency decisions interpreting the statutes and regulations.
The United States courts of appeals are "appellate courts" that hear appeals of cases decided by the district courts, and some direct appeals from administrative agencies.

State (subnational) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sometimes the term federal states is used to avoid any potential ambiguity with sovereign states.
The United States is made up of 50 states (as well as the District of Columbia); see U.S. state.
The Federated States of Micronesia, a federal republic in free association with the United States, is made up of 4 states.

States have paid more attention to the federal money process, in part because the department itself is paying more attention to it, said Patty Sullivan, deputy executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers.
Some states drawn down all their federal money over the summer, to pay expenses from a recently finished school year or to cover costs of the approaching school year, she said.

 States' Rights, Federal Wrongs
One indication of the Framers' concern for the states can be found in the fact that the word "state" or "states" is used 94 times in the 6, 000 words of the original seven articles of the Constitution.
The states have duties which correspond to those rights, but these duties are owed to the citizens of the states, not the federal government.
The States are told to go along with the program 'or else.' Once the federal government has offered matching funds, it is unlikely, as a practical matter, that a member of the State Legislature will turn down his State's fair share of revenue collected from all of the States.

Preserving State Revenue From The Effects of Recent Federal Legislation , 5/1/02
States can avert this loss of revenue — and maintain adequate resources to support programs — by "decoupling." Decoupling means protecting the relevant parts of their tax code from the changes in the federal tax code, in most cases by remaining linked to federal law as it existed prior to the change.
This is because most state estate taxes use the federal credit that is being phased out over the next four years as the basis for the calculation of state estate tax liability.
States in italics (Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nebraska, Texas, Virginia and the District of Columbia) are now decoupled from federal bonus depreciation provision and therefore not expected to be affected by revenue loss.

Page 7  The Division of Authority Between the States and Federal Government
The growth and power of federal regulatory agencies exemplifies the centralization of authority in the federal government as does the tendency of these agencies to expand their authority.
This tendency suggests that the effective management and balancing of federal and state resources to avoid excessive centralization could be a significant problem and that an effective method of controlling the degree of centralization is therefore necessary.
On the other hand, the federal political process is well suited to act as a control mechanism and is, therefore, the proper vehicle to control the degree of centralization.

Each of the 16 states is a world of adventure in and of itself, whether city-states like the Hanseatic towns of Bremen and Hamburg, the Federal capital Berlin, or other states.
Most of the states as we know them today were established after 1945, but they have largely retained their ethnic traditions and characteristics and some of the old boundaries.
After the first free election in the former GDR on 18 March 1990, five new states were created with boundaries largely conforming to those of the period prior to 1952.

The United States agreed to donate 375,000 gallons of diesel fuel to Alaska; the fuel was sold to Bethel for 10 cents a gallon; and Bethel agreed to remove the fuel from its storage location.
Alaska argued that this distinction placed equitable apportionment into a realm of things for which the state was immunized and that, in essence, the claim was nothing more than a claim by a private citizen disguised as a claim by the United States.
Alaska argued: "The United States merely has the equitable ability under the law of apportionment to assert that the first-party plaintiff has a claim against the third-party-defendant," and the United States is "attempting to act as a conduit for plaintiff's claim against the State" and thereby circumvent the Eleventh Amendment.
