The sarcophagus of Frederick II is the most richly decorated; its four lower supports consist of four finely sculptured porphyry lions sitting on their hind legs (Romanesque style of southern Italy).
The opposite shorter side, facing the interior of the Chapel, is decorated with a rosette in the triangular gable and with a cross inscribed in a circle on the face of the keel-shaped portion.
Built in the 12C for King Roger II, the sarcophagus remained empty for a long time, until it was chosen by Frederick II as his own tomb.

Grandson of Frederick I, Frederick II inherited the Sicilian crown as a very young child from his parents, Emperor Henry VI of the Hohenstafen dynasty and Constance of Sicily.
Frederick II is mentioned in three tales of the Decameron: I.7, II.6, and V.5.
The first contains a reference to the liberality of Frederick II, the second speaks of Manfred's rule of Sicily after the death of Frederick, and the last mentions one of Frederick's campaigns in Northern Italy.

Tavolaro ha reperito altre lettere scritte da Federico II, nelle quali "actractus" si potrebbe leggere come cantiere, quindi questa lettera è l’unica testimonianza scritta che noi abbiamo che Federico II abbia avuto a che fare con Castel del Monte.
Tutte le altre volte che Federico II aveva ordinato la costruzione di un castello, aveva un innumerevole numero di corrispondenza con gli architetti relativamente alle modalità di esecuzione della costruzione ed al reperimento delle risorse finanziarie.

In 1249 the pope ordered a crusade to be preached against Frederick II, and after the emperor's death (13 December, 1250), he continued the struggle against Conrad IV and Manfred with unrelenting severity.
