The Fedora Project: An Open-source Digital Object Repository Management System
Fedora is one of a number of repository architectures that have been proposed over recent years for use in digital libraries.
The Fedora architecture is based on object models that by definition are templates for units of content, called data objects, which can include digital resources, metadata about the resources, and linkages to software tools and services that have been configured to deliver the content in desired ways.
In fact, the Fedora object model supports a spectrum of possible configurations from objects where all content is stored in the repository, to "hybrid" objects where some content is managed by the repository and some is stored remotely, to "surrogate" objects whose content is external to the repository.

Fedora digital objects may be related to other Fedora objects in several ways: "for example a Fedora object may represent a collection and other objects that are members of that collection.
Fedora is capable of serving as the foundation for many types of information management applications, including institutional repositories, digital libraries, records management systems, archives, and educational software." The Fedora architecture is "an extensible framework for the storage, management, and dissemination of complex objects and the relationships among them.

Linux Users Can Consider Fedora for General Purposes
Fedora's strengths and weaknesses flow from the distribution's status as a sort of testing ground for RHEL; this tends to make Fedora an early adopter of new and updated software components.
For example, Fedora was among the first distributions to ship with the 2.6 version of the Linux kernel and Security Enhanced Linux—both of which will debut in the upcoming Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.
Another big difference between Fedora and RHEL is the length of time for which Red Hat said it will maintain security updates—five years for RHEL, about one year for each Fedora release.
