Fehling's solution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fehling's solution is a solution used to deferentiate between aldehyde or ketone functional groups.
The substance to be tested is heated together with Fehling's solution; a red precipitate indicates the presence of an aldehydes.
Fehling's solution is nowadays often replaced by Benedict's solution.

Hermann von Fehling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hermann von Fehling (9 June 1812 - 1 July 1885) was a German chemist, famous as the developer of Fehling's solution used for estimation of sugar.
His earlier work included an investigation of succinic acid, and the preparation of phenyl cyanide (better known as benzonitrile), the simplest nitrile of the aromatic series; but later his time was mainly occupied with questions of technology and public health rather than with pure chemistry.
Among the analytical methods worked up by him the best known is that for the estimation of sugars by Fehling's solution, which consists of a solution of cupric sulphate mixed with alkali and potassium sodium tartrate (Rochelle salt).

Fehling's solution on Encyclopedia.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
FEHLING'S SOLUTION [Fehling's solution], deep-blue, alkaline solution used to test for the presence of aldehydes (e.g., formaldehyde, HCHO) or other compounds that contain the aldehyde functional group, -CHO.
Simple sugars (e.g., glucose) give a positive test, so the solution has been used to test for the presence of glucose in urine, a symptom of diabetes; Benedict's solution, which gives the same test, is now more widely used.
Fehling's solution is prepared just before use by mixing equal volumes of two previously prepared solutions, one containing about 70 grams cupric sulfate pentahydrate per liter of solution and the other containing about 350 grams Rochelle salt (potassium sodium tartrate tetrahydrate) and 100 grams sodium hydroxide per liter of solution.

 solution
Solution is two kinds; viz.: a {Mechanical solution}, in which no marked chemical change takes place and in which in the case of solids, the dissolved body can be regained by evaporation, as in the solution of salt or sugar in water.
{Solution of continuity}, the separation of connection, or of connected substances or parts -- applied, in surgery, to a fracture, laceration, or the like ``As in the natural body a wound, or solution of continuity, is worse than a corrupt humor, so in the spiritual.'' --Bacon.
{Standardized solution} (Chem.), a solution which is used as a reagent, and is of a known and standard strength; specifically, a normal solution, containing in each cubic centimeter as many milligrams of the element in question as the number representing its atomic weight; thus a normal solution of silver nitrate would contain 107.7 mgr.

The solution set of f(x): = x over the real numbers is the set {0}.
For any non-zero polynomial f over the complex numbers in one variable, the solution set is made up of finitely many points.
In algebraic geometry solution sets are used to define the Zariski topology.

The method is a modification of the Lane and Bynon (1923) procedure involving the reduction of Soxhlet's modification of Fehling's solution by titration at boiling point against a solution of reducing sugars in honey using methylene blue as an internal indicator.
The maximum accuracy for this type of determination is attained by ensuring that the reduction of the Fehling' 5 solution during the standardization step and in the determination of the reducing sugars in the honey solution are carried out at constant volume.
Dilute 10 mL of this solution to 250 mL with distilled water: honey solution (for sucrose determination) OR prepare the honey solution as in 7.1.4.2(a).

 oxidation of aldehydes and ketones
Because the solution is alkaline, the aldehyde itself is oxidised to a salt of the corresponding carboxylic acid.
Fehling's solution and Benedict's solution are variants of essentially the same thing.
Sodium carbonate solution is alkaline because the carbonate ions react reversibly with water to produce hydroxide ions (and hydrogencarbonate ions).

 Fehling's test for reducing sugars
In this test the presence of aldehydes but not ketones is detected by reduction of the deep blue solution of copper(II) to a red precipitate of insoluble copper oxide.
Fehling's "B" uses 35g of potassium tartrate and 12g of NaOH in 100 ml of distilled water.
The test again is to observe the reduction of the blue copper(II) solution to the red cuprous oxide.

), deep-blue, alkaline solution used to test for the presence of aldehydes (e.g., formaldehyde, HCHO) or other compounds that contain the aldehyde functional group, -CHO.
The substance to be tested is heated with Fehling’s solution; formation of a brick-red precipitate indicates the presence of the aldehyde group.
The cupric ion (complexed with tartrate ion) is reduced to cuprous ion by the aldehyde (which is oxidized) and precipitates as cuprous oxide (Cu O); for this reason, sugars that react with Fehling’s solution are called reducing sugars.
