Felice Anerio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Felice Anerio ( 1560 – September 26 or 27, 1614) was an Italian composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras, and a member of the Roman School of composers.
Felice Anerio was born in Rome, and spent his entire life there.
Anerio was a conservative composer, who largely used the style of Palestrina as a starting point, at least after his youthful period of writing secular works, such as madrigals and canzonettas, was done.

Giovanni Francesco Anerio - Iridis Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Giovanni Anerio was much a more progressive composer than his brother, and in the conservative environment of Rome in the early 17th century, this was progressive indeed.
Many of his madrigals were monodies, borrowing a style which came from Florence other locations to the north; his motets and masses, on the other hand, are conservative and use the Palestrina style, though the motets include figured bass, another innovation from the first decade of the 17th century.
Giovanni Francesco Anerio was a prolific composer, and he wrote motets, litanies, antiphons, "sacred concertos," responsories, psalms, madrigals, much miscellaneous sacred and secular music, as well as a handful of instrumental pieces.

Talk:Felice Anerio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The two Anerio brothers are probably the latest composers who handled 16th-century music as their mother-language; suffering neither from the temptation to indulge even in such mild neologisms as they might have learnt from the elder brother's master, Nanino, nor from the necessity of preserving their purity of style by a mortified negative asceticism.
They wrote pure polyphony because they understood it and loved it, and hence their work lives, as neither the progressive work of their own day nor the reactionary work of their imitators could live.
For one thing, Proske's Musica Divina is 1854, hardly a "modern anthology," though he was a good editor and a good library ought to have this still.

Equally instructive is a comparison with Felice Anerio's canzonetta spirituale, Jesu decus angelicum, of 1585 ( Example 6) with the same pairing of two upper voices on a tenor foundation and virtuoso melismas in the top parts on canticum.
Felice Anerio has been seen as a largely conservative composer, but a considerable number of small-scale concerti with organ copied into partbooks for use in the Duke's cappella show that he was making wide use of newer forms in his work; their neglect has led to a one-sided appreciation of his achievement.
In Felice Anerio's Hi sunt ( Example 11) the organ always follows the lower of the two bass parts, but here we do get some virtuoso vocal writing to illustrate the word insaniam, making use of a stock ornamentation formula (compare the vocal line with the organ part).
