  Feliks Nowowiejski - Sciaga.pl

Nowowiejski’s name has fallen pretty much into oblivion but in his day he was a significant presence in Polish and indeed international musical life.
This is a pity as his later works were far better at assimilating the diverse influences he’d earlier accumulated.
There may be a great deal of generic ephemera to wade through elsewhere but it’s well crafted of its kind and the greater rewards are certainly there.

Known in the west mostly for his organ symphonies, Nowowiejski also composed a substantial body of solo piano music, much of which is based on Polish folk elements as are seven of the pieces on this first volume.
The preludes and ballades are somewhat sterner stuff (although the dance-pieces glare as much as they smile), offering a glance into the soul of a Rachmaninovian late romantic.

 Polish National Anthems: Rota
Rota is the youngest of the famous Polish national songs: it was created in the 20th century.
The song's text was written in 1908 by Maria Konopnicka; the music added two years later by Feliks Nowowiejski.
Konopnicka's poem was a protest against the Prussian legislation that introduced a gradual expropriation of Polish land owners in the Prussian partition of Poland (remaining under Prussian occupation in 1795-1918).

Grunwald: A Monument to Hearten Polish Spirits
It was born of love and gratitude to those ancestors of ours who not for loot, not for conquest, entered the field of battle but instead drew their victorious swords in defense of a just and good cause."
The composer Feliks Nowowiejski had composed an anthem for the occasion and now it was performed for the first time in public by massed choirs from all over the Polish lands.
It was based on the text of a poem Maria Konopnicka had written in 1901 or 1902 (it wasn't published until 1908) at the height of the germanization campaign being carried in the Prussian partition and it expressed sentiments far stronger that Paderewski's speech.
