ChristianWeek   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
TORONTO, ON—The Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada (FEBCC), one of Canada's largest evangelical denominations, may be headed for a split after an effort to make male-only church leadership a test of membership failed at the denomination's annual convention held in Toronto November 4-7.
A motion to require all 496 member churches to adhere to limiting the offices of pastors and elders to "qualified men" as a prerequisite for FEBCC membership received 59 per cent support from the more than 500 delegates present, short of the two-thirds majority needed to enshrine the motion in the denomination's bylaws.
That the issue of women in church leadership positions should threaten to divide the staunchly traditionalist FEBCC is not a surprise, according to Stan Fowler of Heritage College and Seminary in Cambridge, Ontario, one of the FEBCC's sources of ministry personnel.

A letter was sent to all FEBCC churches in April 2003 indicating the National Council's bylaw amendment, but it was revised and resent on June 26, 2003 after consultation with some faculty from Heritage College and Seminary and Northwest Baptist Seminary, which are considered FEBCC approved training institutions.
Since those training future pastors, leaders, and members of the FEBCC churches, are promoting egalitarianism there is no reason to doubt that some of their students will embrace the egalitarian position and be welcomed into the churches of the FEBCC.
Some evangelical egalitarians have argued that there is an equal submission of the members of the Trinity to each other, so that the Father submits to the Son.

Men-only leadership test creates tension among Fellowship Baptists
A motion was debated at the denomination's annual convention held in Toronto in November requiring all 496 member churches to limiting the offices of pastors and elders to "qualified men" as a prerequisite for membership.
According to FEBCC President Terry Cuthbert, the vast majority of Fellowship churches support a complementarian interpretation of scripture that limits governing ministries to men.
Whether or not making the male-only church leadership a test of membership is eventually adopted, the FEBCC is likely facing some sort of division over the issue, according to Bob Parks, pastor of Benton Street Baptist Church in Kitchener.
