In 1937 it became the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren.
Church leaders began to promote distance from Mennonite Central Committee, cast doubt upon Mennonite colleges and pressed for abandonment of the Mennonite name.
Much of this happened in connection with the founding of Grace Bible Institute, now Grace College, in Omaha, Neb. Grace was founded mostly by dissident General Conference Mennonites, but its first president was J. Barkman of the EMB mother church, Ebenezer, in Henderson.

Pandora Press U.S.: LEAVING ANABAPTISM Advance Comments
Small overtures were made in the early years to merge with the (Old) Mennonite Church and the Evangelical Mennonite Conference (Defenceless Mennonites), but always there was a hesitancy about the Mennonite connection.
The church removed "Mennonite" from its official name, convinced that ethnic and cultural factors deterred evangelism.
While the Fellowship of Evangelical Bible Churches is a tiny denomination, in Calvin Redekop's masterful treatment the story of how and why this group abandoned its Anabaptist commitments becomes a valuable case study of small reform movements that lose their way while seeking to survive in the marketplace of American religion.
