Femme fatale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A classic portrayal of a femme fatale is given in Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet in the character of Justine.
The femme fetale is sometimes the foil or the enemy of the ingenue and/or the damsel in distress.
The femme fatale was a central character in film noir, usually tempting the male protagonist to his inevitable doom.

No Place for a Woman: The Femme Fatale   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The classic femme fatale resorts to murder to free herself from an unbearable relationship with a man who would try to possess and control her, as if she were a piece of property or a pet.
The husband of the femme fatale may have a full-grown child from a previous marriage (Double Indemnity, Murder, My Sweet), but the child's age implies that the father's sexual activity is long past and that his current marriage is empty of sexual desire.
In the majority of noir films, however, the femme fatale remains committed to her independence, seldom allowing herself to be converted by the hero or captured by the police.

 "Femme Fatale" - Salon
Watching "Femme Fatale" is like being given a plush, comfy seat at the swankiest peep show in town.
In "Femme Fatale" De Palma is comparable to the sly prankster Luis Buñuel proved himself to be in "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie." De Palma makes a joke of our gullibility and gets us to laugh at how easy it is to be suckered -- and how much fun it is.
"Femme Fatale" is the first movie he's made in which fate can not only be cruel but also fortuitous, as liable to deliver a windfall as a disaster.

 Femme Fatale
Femme Fatale returns De Palma to his favored genre with a film that explores revenge and reinvention, flavored with an undercurrent of moral ambiguity and titillating corruption.
As in all noir films, Laura is the standard femme fatale archetype; a hard-edged woman who refuses to conform to female stereotypes, is seen as a threat by men for her intelligence and shrewdness, and uses her sexuality to manipulate those around her.
“Femme Fatale’s” dialogue is stripped down to the essentials, its story being moved forward instead by sexual tension, plot twists, and creative camera techniques, notably De Palma’s use of split screen to direct the audience’s attention and construction of the Cannes heist as more silent film than Hollywood blockbuster.

 Femme Fatale (2002): Reviews
Fatale is, truthfully, a mess - an absurdly overwritten Eurotrash thriller that beggars an audience's suspension of disbelief.
Femme Fatale is glossy, glamorous cinema as collage.
Actually, both Mission and Femme show us a master in action, and both exceed the boundaries of formualic conventions by stepping into metaphysical territory; but whereas Mission inflates into New Age schlock, Femme Fatale is sinuous and lean, brutally seductive, thereby allowing for more satisfying visceral pleasure and titillating occultish speculations.

With Femme Fatale, Brian de Palma proposes an amused exercise in style, bright fireworks that voraciously embrace all the clichés of the genre and officiate as a parodied and baroque homage.
Femme Fatale establishes itself as a turning point in the filmmaker's career.
If Femme Fatale seems like a superficial film with simple dialogue, caricatured characters and unequal casting, it is precisely that the film likens itself to that which it mocks, showing off as an erotic Hitchcockian soap opera that flirts with press "people".

The writer/director himself doesn't seem to really care all that much about plot and story, or why A leads to B which ends with C, etc. De Palma ("Mission Impossible") is most interested in the exercise of moviemaking style, of technique and devices, and the rest are purely incidental.
"Femme Fatale" opens with Laure (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) participating in a poorly planned heist of some fancy jewelry (although they don't look like it) that is currently being (literally) worn by a supermodel.

More than familiar, it's a cheat, a lazy bit of self-indulgence that hopes to make hay with the idea that if Hitchcock's possessor of the gaze and water imagery is pushed to the text from the subtext, then the whole of the extant narrative from plot to character becomes the audience's flaccid MacGuffin.
She falls from a balcony, drifts off to sleep in a bathtub, meets her French twin, spars with a ridiculous lisping photographer who resembles Antonio Banderas, and fails to convince that she has the smarts to be half as dangerous as Femme Fatale hopes she seems.

The femme fatale has been roundly condemned as misogynist by feminist literary criticism, though in most (and especially contemporary) hard-boiled narrative the reader is more apt to find modern female characters with some archetypal traits, and female characters unrelated to the archetype at all, rather than the pure archetype.

Femme Fatale, DePalma, per usual, references many other movies, but the nods that have the most impact are the allusions to his own work.
Perhaps more than any film he’s made up to this point, Femme Fatale is DePalma’s most humanistic defense of his body of work, but only a director with his unique obsessions and talents could make a statement of humanism that’s so provocative, sexy, and exciting.

Film Noir's Progressive Portrayal of Women, by John Blaser   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The quintessential femme fatale of film noir uses her sexual attractiveness and ruthless cunning to manipulate men in order to gain power, independence, money, or all three at once.
Film noir's portrayal of the femme fatale, therefore, would seem to support the existing social order — and particularly its rigidly defined gender roles — by building up the powerful, independent woman, only to punish her in the end.
