Fender Bass VI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fender Bass VI, originally known as the Fender VI, is a six-string electric bass by Fender.
The Fender VI was released in 1961, and followed the concept of the Danelectro 6-string bass released in 1956, having six strings tuned E-E, an octave below the spanish guitar.
This mechanism was developed for the Fender Jazzmaster, and also used on the Fender Jaguar.

Fender Jazzmaster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fender Jazzmaster electric guitar was first introduced at the 1958 NAMM show and was designed as a more upmarket instrument than the Fender Stratocaster, which itself was introduced in 1954 as a higher-priced product than the company's Telecaster series.
The Jazzmaster had a mellower tone than the Strat, which gave it a more jazzy sound, although it wasn't embraced by jazz musicians.
Another common Jazzmaster modification is the addition of a "Buzz Stop", a bar that mounts above the tremolo system and increases the angle of the strings behind the bridge, supposedly increasing sustain while decreasing string buzz (another common problem with the original Jazzmaster bridge).

The intricacies of the Fender Jazzmaster
The Jazzmaster’s originally simple grounding to the strings was accomplished with piece of guitar string installed in with one of the bridge thimbles and bent to ground on the pickguard shield plate.
The knobs on the Jazzmaster were changed from the original Strat style to a white amp knob style with “Vol” and “tone” lettering on the metal cap in fall of 1964.
Jazzmaster and Jaguar guitars were top of the line instruments at the time, so this option was used frequently when the owner started to wear their guitar out, or wanted to change the color and upgrade to a Custom Color.

Jazzmaster, introduced in 1958, became Fender's "top of the line" instrument (though today's vintage guitar market does not hold this view; it's clearly a 3rd class citizen behind the Strat and Tele).
This was the standard neck on all models until 1958 (when the Jazzmaster was introduced with a rosewood fingerboard; the rest of the Fender models changed to rosewood fingerboards in mid-1959).
Fender has recently (in the last 20 years) introduced LOTS of different serial numbers schemes, depending on the country the Fender was made (USA, Mexico, Japan, Korea, etc).

Fender Jazzmaster   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The Fender Jazzmaster is an unusual guitar, in that it can be regarded as a "failed" experiment by Leo Fender, yet it has undergone several resurgences.
It originally was the quintessential surf guitar in the '60s, favored by New Wave guitarists such as Elvis Costello in the '80s, and is currently popular with grunge bands in the '90s.
An apocryphal story regarding the Jazzmaster is that supposedly Eric Clapton was looking for one during his transition from Gibsons to Fenders in the late '60s, couldn't find one and settled for the mongrel Stratocaster that eventually became known as Blackie.

Later on when the production numbers of Fender guitars got to the one hundred thousand mark, the "1" in "100,000" was apparently stamped as an "L" by mistake.

A Jazzmaster coil is very thin and squat, thinner even than a P90.They still have magnetic poles like a Strat single coil but the coil shape the string sees underneath it is much wider, more like a P90.
Jazzmaster pickups are exactly as Tim described, although I would like to add that both Jazzmasters and Jaguars have the two pickups reverse wound and polarity to each other so they're humbucking with them both on together.
Fender knows they're wrong but they won't change a thing because of the 'original freaks'.

IN THE MIDST OF ITS SCRAMBLE to compete with Fender by developing its radical Flying V and Explorer guitars, the Gibson company likely didn’t realize that Leo Fender was similarly trying to loosen its grip on the jazz guitar market of the late 1950s.
Perhaps in an attempt to emulate the tones of Gibson’s patented humbucking pickups, Leo opted to equip the Jazzmaster with pickups that had wider, flatter coils.
The final new mechanical element was the Jazzmaster’s “Trem-lock,” which allowed the guitar to function in a vibrato-free mode and boasted the added function of holding the guitar in tune even if a string popped while the guitar was played.

You've come to my very own place of worship of Fender's Jazzmaster and Jaguar, the wonderful, but often underrated guitars, once designed to be the top-of-the-line models in Fender's production line.
By then Sonic Youth had utilized Jazzmasters in every modification and variation, of course there were many more musicians, but on a "non-geek"-level (i.e not for specialists only), Elvis Costello, Nirvana, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine are the names most often connected with these guitars, surf-musicians not included.
