Rhodes piano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rhodes piano was invented in the 1940s by Harold Rhodes, and its principles are derived from both the celesta and the electric guitar.
The action is similar to that of a conventional piano, but whereas in a conventional piano each key causes felt-covered hammers to strike sets of strings, in a Rhodes piano felt-tipped hammers strike metal dowels called "tines" to create a ping sound which also resonate the tuning forks over each one, creating a mellow ring.
The final Rhodes electric piano was the short-lived Mk V in 1984, which is thought to be the perfect Rhodes due to portability, and tweaked design that avoids key/hammer bouncing.

The Rhodes Suitcase was used on the early Led Zeppelin tours from 1971 to 1973, often with a covering showing Jones' famous rune/symbol over the speaker box.

The 73-key Electric Piano was renamed the Fender Rhodes Suitcase Piano in 1969, featuring a fl harp cover and a stereo 80W amp, and by 1970 the Fender Rhodes Mark I Stage Piano was available.
The Stage Piano was the piano top from the Suitcase model, modified for use with an external guitar or bass amplifier.
The Rhodes engineers had finally found ways to stabilize the tone and pitch of keys in the extreme registers of the piano, with the lowest bass notes not needing tonebars and the highest notes requiring wood-core hammer tips.

Bill alternates between the Rhodes and the Steinway, but generally the keyboards are recorded more distantly in the mix, and though Bill plays well, the performance of both doesn’t merit much comment.

The electric piano's properties mesh with the angular harmonic elements of signature Monk ventures like "Ugly Beauty," here slowed to a snail's crawl and sounding more than a little like a Sun Ra outtake circa "Advice for Medics," and the closing "We See," which switches reference points to Mwandishi-era Hancock.
In recent years Craig Taborn has championed the Fender Rhodes in his own groups and those of Tim Berne, and with Karayorgis now in the game we might have the makings of a minor, and long overdue, renaissance for the instrument in improvisatory music settings.
We chose to use the electric piano partly out of necessity, since the Abbey had no piano, and partly out of curiosity for the effect it would have on our music.
