Rhodes piano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rhodes piano was invented in the 1940s by Harold Rhodes, and its principles are derived from both the celesta and the electric guitar.
The action is similar to that of a conventional piano, but whereas in a conventional piano each key causes felt-covered hammers to strike sets of strings, in a Rhodes piano felt-tipped hammers strike metal dowels called "tines" to create a ping sound which also resonate the tuning forks over each one, creating a mellow ring.
The final Rhodes electric piano was the short-lived Mk V in 1984, which is thought to be the perfect Rhodes due to portability, and tweaked design that avoids key/hammer bouncing.

Fender - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fender offered the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster (originally named the 'Broadcaster', 'Esquire' is a single pickup version); the first mass-produced electric bass, the Precision Bass (or P-Bass); and the enormously popular Stratocaster guitar (or 'Strat' for short).
Fender manufactures its highest quality models in the United States, but also has extensive manufacturing facilities in Japan, Mexico (company-owned) China, Indonesia (Cort) and Korea (Cort), such that a new guitar with the name, 'Fender Stratocaster,' can be purchased for roughly the same dollar amount today as in 1954.
Fenders built in Ensenada, Mexico took over for the early Japanese guitars as the less expensive counterparts to the American models, while more recent Japanese Fenders are now mainly for the Japanese market, as counterparts to the American-made Fenders, and with only a small number marked for export.

 John Paul Jones' Fender Rhodes
While the Fender Rhodes sounded more like bells or a celeste than a stringed piano, it was easy to amplify, and easy to move.
The Fender Rhodes became the classic live piano instrument for Led Zeppelin on the 1971 tour, and would remain in the backline until 1978.
The Rhodes Suitcase was used on the early Led Zeppelin tours from 1971 to 1973, often with a covering showing Jones' famous rune/symbol over the speaker box.

Harold Rhodes: 1910-2000   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
He designed and developed the famous Fender Rhodes piano which became a trademark sound of the late-60s and early-70s in funk, soul, rock and pop music, and was fundamental to the development of jazz-rock and its offshoots in the music of artists like Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.
Unlike all other electric pianos of the day, the instrument was responsive to variations in touch on the keyboard, and had a rich, full-bodied sound which lent itself ideally to the fusion experiments of the era.
Rhodes lost the rights to the brand name for a time, but regained them in 1997, and was said to have been investigating the possibility of relaunching his piano in association with other members of his family.

 Fender Rhodes Mark I (1969-1975)
The 73-key Electric Piano was renamed the Fender Rhodes Suitcase Piano in 1969, featuring a fl harp cover and a stereo 80W amp, and by 1970 the Fender Rhodes Mark I Stage Piano was available.
The Stage Piano was the piano top from the Suitcase model, modified for use with an external guitar or bass amplifier.
The Rhodes engineers had finally found ways to stabilize the tone and pitch of keys in the extreme registers of the piano, with the lowest bass notes not needing tonebars and the highest notes requiring wood-core hammer tips.

The Suitcase Pianos are equipped with a cabinet with a power amp and four speakers and a pre-amp, which is placed above the keyboard, on the namerail.
On the album’s reworking of “Waltz For Debby”, Bill starts on the acoustic piano in the key of A major, adding superb newly reworked harmonies to his original conception, until modulating down to F major, where tempo begins, as he reiterates the theme on the Rhodes, using little fragments of it, in short phrases.

In 1965 the Fender Rhodes company is bought by CBS and it is under the ownership of CBS as the first real Rhodes electric piano is about to be manufactured.
The reason to that was that CBS didn't considered that Leo Fender had contributed that much either to the design or the development of the piano during his years as owner.

In particular, the Rhodes piano lends itself to long, sustained "floating" chords in a way which would be impossible on an acoustic instrument, while the Hohner Clavinet has an instantly recognisable vocabulary of percussive riffs and figures which owe less to conventional piano and clavichord styles than to funk rhythm guitar and slap bass.
Jazz and pop musicians loved the Rhodes piano because it was the first that could amp up without distortion and be heard with other electric instruments, but had the touch dynamics of the acoustic piano: the sound could be soft if the key was pressed softly or it could be loud if hit hard.
The Rhodes piano held its tune much longer than an acoustic and the player had the power to hold a note as long as the key was pressed.

However, no one would deny that the Fender Rhodes Electric Piano deserves not only legendary status but also that of being one of the most coveted and influential keyboard instruments of the last 35 years.
The inventor, Harold Rhodes, first began making musical instruments in the 1940s, initially developing a type of electric xylophone which was, oddly enough, constructed from bits of aluminium tubing salvaged from B17 bombers.
In the early 1960s and in conjunction with Leo Fender, Harold Rhodes developed the Fender Rhodes Piano Bass, which was based around a small 32 note keyboard which utilised the principal of striking aluminium tubes or tines to create the distinctive sound.
