Fender's only real competition in the solid bodied guitar market, Gibson, had produced the Les Paul model and, later, the SG series which did nothing to further guitar technology, but were merely overly complex 'me-toos' in most ways, good guitars in their own right, but hardly ground-breaking.
In the early sixties, Fenders were more sought-after by guitarists, so when young aspiring guys in England like Eric Clapton and others of that generation couldn't get a Fender, they picked up and settled for the more frumpy and less desirable Gibsons.

1973 Fender Telecaster Deluxe,This guitar has been a favorite of mine for years and years.
Everything else on the guitar is just as it was in ’73; Les Paul type controls, BIG Fender ‘wide tone’ pickups (so wide you gotta turn ‘em off to sound good), one of the biggest pickguards ever on a production guitar (crazy;), contour shaped back (real comfy), and a good overall weight about 9 lbs.
When I first bought it was completely original except for the un-groovy white refinish, the neck was a ‘B’ width…way too thin for me, so I replaced it with a Mexican Tele Custom neck and did the 4 bolt conversion also.
