Born in 1895 in Tanghe, in the Henan Province in eastern China, to a moderately well-to-do family (of the landlord class), Feng Youlan lived his life through a series of civil wars and political upheavals.
The outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War led to Feng's flight from Beijing, together with the students and staff from Tsinghua, Beijing, and Nankai Universities, and to the formation first of the Changsha Temporary University in Hengshan, then of the Southwest Associated University in Kunming.
Feng Youlan may be best known for his history of Chinese philosophy, but he was one of the most original and influential of modern Chinese philosophers.

Feng Youlan (Simplified Chinese: 冯友兰; Traditional Chinese: 馮友蘭; pinyin: Féng Yǒulán; Wade-Giles: Feng Yu-lan; also: Fung Yu-Lan; 1895–1990) was a Chinese philosopher who was important for reintroducing the study of Chinese philosophy.
He studied philosophy at Shanghai University, then at Beijing University where he was able study Western philosophy and logic as well as Chinese philosophy.
When, in 1946 the three Universities returned to Beijing, Feng instead went to the U.S. again, this time to take up a post as visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania He spent the year 1948-1949 as a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii.

I am also honored to come to you as a faculty member of an institution that has maintained its own rich connection to China throughout the years.
I cannot here present this connection in any detail, but I would like to note the interactions that took place between John Dewey and Chinese educators such as Tao Xingzhi, Feng Youlan, Chen Heqin, and Hu Shi at Teachers College.
These interactions began in the 1910s and culminated with John Dewey residing in China from 1919 to 1921 (this was the major foreign residence during his distinguished career).
