Fenland lighters represent one of the great pillars on which much of the regional history rests, and the Project has been able to emphasise this fact while co-operating with a number of organisations including the BBC and Anglia Television.
During 2001, the Fenland Lighter Project was approached by Anglia Television (Granada) regarding historical advice for the River Nene programmes in the very popular 'Riddles of the River' series.
As indicated in the preceding section, the river trade of the Fenland lighters served in effect as an inland extension of seagoing traffic.

The company - Fenland Green Power Investments - is being launched jointly by Eastern Generation, the generating arm of energy group Eastern, and its partner in the windcluster projects, Wind Prospect.

Comprehensive environmental statements accompanied the applications to Fenland District Council and if planning consent is granted construction could start early next year, with the wind turbines operational by next summer.

 Gaining a Full Fenland
A Full Fenland is what you can claim to have gained if you have visited all the places with the names of multiple named settlements in the Fens of England.
A Full Fenland itself cannot be gained until all 100 settlement points have been gained, therefore you have to have visited all places listed in the Credit System table.
A Full Fenland would be nigh on impossible to gain in one day, especially with the number of tractors on the road.

With both formal sequences flown the Fenland Trophy contest was safely completed regardless of what the weather might produce the next day.
The program did show the problem of orientation at Fenland with few landmarks to help, and a couple of pilots managed to fly several manoeuvres on the B instead of the A axis.
Fenland made us very welcome indeed and the whole atmosphere of the event was a tribute to them.

Due to an increasing workload Fenland Arts Association is seeking to identify freelance workers in or near to Fenland who can undertake occasional, short term projects.
It has a service level agreement with Fenland District Council for the delivery of certain key functions, including the production and distribution of the bi-monthly What’s On leaflet and the provision of additional marketing for arts activity in the District.
The projects that Fenland Arts Association is commissioned to organise are usually funded by more than one source but will be hosted by a lead organisation with whom the Freelance Worker would collaborate closely.

Agriculture in the upper fenlands was much like agriculture elsewhere in England, though more subject to flooding.
Fenlands still existed, of course, but their size was much restricted from what it once had been, and thus so was the populations of various creatures.
Since the layers of peat in the former fenlands were often quite deep, the land would subside beneath it's former level, and therefore require more powerful pumping to achieve the same results.

 East Anglian Archaeology - Landscape
The Fenland region of eastern England was once the largest wetland in Britain and a rich archaeological resource, but centuries of drainage and cultivation have drastically reduced the deposits.
Archaeological studies of the landscape were initiated in the 1930s but it was not until the formation of the Fenland Project in 1981 that a systematic field survey combining archaeological and environmental work was undertaken, with the aim of establishing policies for the preservation and excavation of important sites and landscapes.
This second volume of results from the Lincolnshire Fenland survey deals with fieldwork in the northern fens and their margins, a small group of parishes at the southern end of the Witham Valley, and the coastal parish of Wrangle.

 The Prehistoric Society - Book Review
The fenland of south Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and west Norfolk, with its low rainfall and drying winds, was an ideal area for the collection of sea salt by evaporation; an industry that first appears in the last years of the Bronze Age and continued into the Middle Ages with few changes in technology.
It required a re-assessment of other sites identified in the 1980s Fenland Survey, or those that had produced briquetage and that could be related to well-stratified collections from excavation.
The majority of saltern sites defined by the Fenland Survey were late Iron Age or ‘Roman’, and extended out onto sediments in what had been salt lagoon in the earlier period.

 Archaeology Review 1996 - 97 : 4.20.22 Fenland management project
This project succeeded the Fenland Survey {1981-89) and Fenland Evaluation (1989-90) Projects, and constitutes a programme of fieldwork to implement agreed management action resulting from the earlier projects.
The project is an important element of the major programme of survey and excavation work throughout the lowland wetlands of England supported by EH since the 1970's (including the Somerset Levels Project, the North West Wetlands Survey, and the Humber Wetlands Project).
Publication of the first Fenland Management Project reports, the summary volume, and the saltmaking volume is anticipated in 1998.

Multiple Fenland Village collecting is great both due to the satisfaction visiting 145 near featureless places can bring, and because it allows you to make observations about the area.
The MFVCS is open to all people who are able to claim any Full award in the Full Fenland table or alternatively a 5% Fenland.
This was done and so January 2nd 2001 goes down as the day the board gained the Revisied Full Fenland though their achievement of March 19th 2000 will still be recognised as the day they gained a Full Fenland.
