The Last of The Last: Historical Land Use and Its Impacts on the Natural Forest
The land use histories impacting the forests of Fennoscandia and Northern European Russia are slightly different because of the different political and economic histories of the region.
In Fennoscandia, sustainable forest management, which attempts to mimic natural process and restore system complexity, could be characterized as the next emergent phase of forest use in the region.
This phase is in its infancy in Fennoscandia.

The Last of The Last: NGO Demands Concerning the Old-growth Forests of Fennoscandia
The remaining old-growth forests of Fennoscandia should not be subject to any human activity (e.g., forestry) that damages their nature conservation values regarding biodiversity, structure and ecological function.
Protection of the remaining old-growth forests of Fennoscandia will not be sufficient to ensure the long-term survival of all the endangered forest species, but it is one of the vital steps.
If the Nordic countries are to meet their international commitments, such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe, there must be a combination of land area protection, increased consideration of nature conservation in forestry operations and active measures for the restoration of biological diversity.

Flexural rigidity of Fennoscandia inferred from the postglacial uplift
To determine the flexural rigidity, the isostatic response to deglaciation in Fennoscandia is modeled using an Earth model with a layered mantle viscosity overlain by an elastic lithosphere.
This is regarded as minimum for the flexural rigidity of central Fennoscandia.

 Earthquakes in Fennoscandia
Together they suggest that the melting of the Pleistocene ice sheet in Fennoscandia had played an important role in the generation of faults and earthquakes in early postglacial times.
First of all, the throw of the postglacial faults in Fennoscandia averages about 15 meters and is thus much larger than that in E. Canada.
Secondly, the mode of failure of current earthquakes in Fennoscandia is a mixture of strike-slip, normal and thrust motion whereas in E. Canada it is mostly thrusting.
