 Nirnaeth Arnoediad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Fingon fell under his might, and Húrin begged Turgon to retreat to Gondolin.
Huor and Húrin and the remaining Men of Dor-lómin formed a living wall across the Fens of Serech, buying time for Turgon to escape with most of the surviving Elves of the north.
The Men of Dor-lómin were all slain, until Huor fell when his eye was pierced by a poisoned arrow, and his brother Húrin was captured alive when he was pinned under a mountain of slain Orcs and Trolls.

 Middle-Earth Articles - Olag-hai Fidelity ::: The Barrow-Downs
The men under Húrin and Huor made their final stand at the Fens of Serech, which lie to the southwest of Ard-Galen, and there were wiped out, all save Húrin, who after a mighty final effort was finally taken alive to Angband, where he was held captive for many years.
The text clearly states that the sun was "westering" as Huor fell, that after that Húrin alone remained, and that after that, he slew seventy trolls, and that after that he slew Orcs until the numbers of the dead finally buried him and he was captured.
Don't forget, too, that the distance from Serech to Angband was many miles ("Before the gates of Angband filth and desolation spread southward for many miles over the wide plain of Ard-galen…" The Silmarillion, Chapter 14 "Of Beleriand and Its Realms"; c.f.

As for Finrod, he was surrounded and cut off at the Fen of Serech with few guards around him.
But just when he was about to be slain or taken, Barahir of the House of Bëor came to his aid with men of his household, and forming a wall around Finrod allowed the King to escape and return to Nargothrond.
He spoke to his people about his need to aid Beren in the seemingly hopeless Quest that Thingol had sent him on, recalling the deeds of the House of Bëor and their long friendship with the kingdom.

Isildur, for example, broke into the well-guarded royal palace of Númenor to steal a sapling of the White Tree.
That's a pretty significant accomplishment, but does it rival Hurin's stand at the fens of Serech, or Turin's defeat of Glaurung, or Earendil's defeat of Ancalagon (not to mention Earendil's years of voyages to find Valinor)?
