Fenwick Island, together with the towns of Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, and South Bethany, comprises Delaware's beach resort area and is Sussex County's most densely-populated and fastest-growing area.
Fenwick Island and its neighbors to the north, Bethany Beach and South Bethany are popularly known as "The Quiet Resorts".
Fenwick Island, however, is somewhat less "quiet" than "the Bethanies" because it is immediately across the state line from Ocean City, Maryland, which has a well-deserved reputation as a wild place.

 Fenwick Island History
The beginning of modern Fenwick Island may be traced from a specific date - March 23, 1680, the day that Lord Baltimore granted a tract of land called “Fishing Harbor” to Col. Williams Stevens.
Fenwick’s rights to the land at Fenwick Island came through a grant from Lord Baltimore in 1682.
Charles L. Gray, the last keeper of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse, was living in the newer house at that time, and on October 21, 1940, he purchased the older home and roughly one-third of the original plot including the eastern edge of 660 feet.

Even the locals sometimes forget that the whole area -- Ocean City, Fenwick, Bethany -- is part of the same barrier island that formerly stretched all the way through Assateague Island and was divided only relatively recently by water eroding the Indian River and Ocean City inlets.
Although Route 1 runs right through both the Delaware Seashore State Park (between Dewey Beach and Bethany) and Fenwick Island State Park (between Fenwick Island and Bethany), they remain only sparsely populated, and mostly by locals.
Quick-march through local history by stopping at the Fenwick Island Lighthouse (146th Street west of Coastal Highway; 302-539-4115), and while you're there, look by the fence for the Transpeninsular Line stone, which since 1760 has marked the line between Lord Calvert's land grant -- i.e., Maryland -- and William Penn's (Delaware).
