The present church was built onthe foundation of an earlier church built by Ivan Kalita in 1333 in thanks giving for relief from famine.
The original church had frescoes (not preserved) painted by Feofan Grek (Theophanes Greek) in 1399.
The demolition of the first Cathedralof the Archangel began on 21 May 1505; the new one built by Alevisio the Younger, a rectangular structure with a system of five domesoffset towards the east end, was consecrated on 8 November 1508.

Probably Andrei Rublev lived in Troitsky Monastery under Nikon Radonezhsky, who became monk after the death of Sergii Radonezhsky ( 1392).
The first mention about Rublev’s iconography was in 1405 when he decorated icons and frescos for the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Moscow Kremlin in company with Feofan Grek and Prokhor of Gorodets.
His name was the last of the list of masters as the smallest both by rank and by age.

The Cathedral of the Annunciation, with its nine gilded domes, is the smallest of the three main Kremlin cathedrals, but the decoration of the interior (in particular the frescoes and icons by Andrei Rublev and Feofan Grek) makesit one of the great treasures of Moscow.
The cathedral was built in 1484-89 by a team of buildersfrom Pskov as the court church of Grand Prince Ivan III.

The department of Public Relationships of the Bank of Russia reports that on July 1, 2004, the Bank of Russia issued silver and golden memorial coins devoted to Feofan Grek.
The golden coins are at the face value of 50 and 10000 roubles, silver coins — at the face value of 3 and 100 roubles.

Icons from the same period display a very strong Greek influence even though they show a very characteristic Russian style at the same time.
In the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, Novgorod produced some of the greatest works of medieval Russian art, best represented by the paintings of Theophanes the Greek (Feofan Grek).
In some of his greatest works it is possible to find the combination of the local style with the style of Constantinople, where he worked before coming to Russia.
