Ferde Grofé was born Ferdinand Rudolph von Grofé, to Emil and Elsa von Grofé, in New York City on 27th March 1892.
One of the musicians in the audience was Paul Whiteman, whose orchestra Grofé joined in 1917 as pianist, permanently employed from 1920 for the next twelve years as pianist, assistant conductor, orchestrator and librarian.
Grofé now undertook the composition of original works and among his earliest hits was the tone-poem, Broadway at Night.

 Ferde Grofe Orch. works
Ferde GrofÈ (1892-1972) was of French Huguenot parentage, born into a musical family (his father a baritone and actor, his mother a cellist and music teacher).
GrofÈ went on to a distinguished many-faceted career composing many programmatic works, teaching orchestration and composition at Juilliard, fulfilling commissions and appearing as conductor.
It surely is Grofe's LOUDEST music, beginning with "Thunder of the Waves," describing the masses of cascading water, and continuing with "Devil's Hole Massacre" in which the Indian ambush of a British wagon train in September 1763 is described quite vividly.

 The Big Band Arrangers
Ferde received his earliest piano and viola lessons from her.
Grofé's method was to consult with Whiteman on the bands new numbers, and, during the initial rehearsal, the musicians were free to offer suggestions.
For the second rehearsal, Ferde had incorporated the suggested changes and improvements into the arrangement, and the charts for the new numbers were committed to paper, right down to the last note.

Music For Moderns V.1: 1927-1928 - Paul Whiteman
In this experimentation, Whiteman was inestimably aided by the New York-born pianist (and ex-Los Angeles Symphony viola-player) Ferde Grof (1892-1972).
Grof was principal arranger with the Whiteman organisation from 1920 to 1927.
Sea Burial is a movement from his Eastern Seas (1920), one of two works in light, descriptive vein (the other was Persimmon Pucker) orchestrated by Grof for the Whiteman Orchestra.

The task of orchestrating the music to suit Paul Whiteman's orchestra (for which it was composed) was given to Ferde Grof who completed his work on February 4.
Whiteman brought three members of his band (including his arranger, Ferde Grof) with him to try their luck on the opposite side of the country.
With the great success that greeted the Rhapsody, Grof revised the orchestration to accommodate the full forces of a symphony orchestra and that is the version most often played.

This is one of the freshest, most absorbingly joyful versions of the Gershwin available, full of colors you will have likely never encountered, with an exuberantly inventive MTT at the keyboard.

Art Hickman and His Orchestra   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Hickman had been the most celebrated bandleader in San Francisco while Whiteman was still a sideman there, and Whiteman's band at the Alexandria Hotel in Los Angeles in 1919 had almost the same instrumentation as Hickman's, except for having only one banjo and (in photos) two tenor saxophones.
However, by 1920, when Whiteman first recorded for Victor, his approach to music seems to have been rather different from Hickman's, owing to the services of arranger Ferde Grof.
According to Clyde Doerr in a 1970 interview, Jimmy Thompson and his partners, owners of the Palais Royal and several other New York night spots, had been trying unsuccessfully to get Hickman to stay in New York when the "Follies" ended.
