Elefant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Porsche AG had manufactured about one hundred hulls for their proposal of the Tiger tank, the 'Porsche Tiger' in the Nibelungenwerke factory in St. Valentin, Austria.
It was therefore decided that the Porsche hulls were to be used as the basis of a new heavy tank destroyer, mounting the Krupp's newly developed 88 mm Pak 43/2 anti-tank gun.
All but one of the available Ferdinands were put to use in the Battle of Kursk, the first combat the Ferdinand saw.

World War I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, in Sarajevo.
The first tanks were used during the Battle of the Somme on September 15, 1916; mechanical reliability issues hampered their mobility but the experiment proved its worth as protection against enemy weapons, particularly the machine gun.
Within a year the British were fielding tanks by the hundreds and showed their potential during the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917 by breaking the Hindenburg Line while combined arms teams captured 8000 enemy soldiers and 100 guns.

BBC - h2g2 - The Influence of Tanks in World War II
Tank philosophy in France was a bewildering mixture of the obsolete and ultra-modern.
German tanks were all designed on the three-man turret principle, where a tank gunner looked after aiming and firing; a loader/radio operator reloaded the gun as well as relaying radio messages; and the tank commander was left to concentrate on leading and directing his tank as well as co-ordinating any other units under his command.
Japanese tank crews appeared to have no conception of even the most basic tactical considerations:- it was as if the only manoevre they had been trained to do was to attack on sight, even if it meant a headlong rush by a single tank against two or three enemy tanks supported by field guns.

 Articles - World War I
Tanks were introduced in World War I by the British and created mechanized warfare that dominated the rest of the 20th century.
The first use of tanks was during the Battle of the Somme on 15 September 1916.
Their first use proved tanks needed infantry support and massed formations, but within a year the British were fielding tanks by the hundreds and showed their potential during the Battle of Cambrai, in November 1917, breaking the Hindenburg Line while capturing 8000 enemy and 100 artillery guns.

The mighty tank hunter was armed with an 8.8cm PaK 43/2 gun, and was painted in a camouflage scheme of bold ‘squiggles’ of colour.
It was first deployed during the Battle of Kursk and, though destroying 320 Russian tanks, performed very poorly in other respects: many units broke down and they proved dangerously vulnerable to infantry, lacking a machine gun.

Armour wise the Challenger II is the most heavily armoured tank in the world — but it takes a speed hit and is 10-20km slower than the Abrams.
The Challenger also has the best gun in the tank world and as the recent gulf war showed is capable of penetrating extremely heavy armour (well it was pretty close by, on the other hand is was a heavily armoured British tank :)).
The rifled main tank gun is much more accurate at far and extreme ranges due to the spin of the projectile.

Froude built himself a towing tank on his own property and in part with his own funds, for the operation of which he had formulated a similarity law for flows under the influence of gravity.
This law has come to be known under Froude's name, although it had actually been announced at least 20 years earlier by Ferdinand Reech (1805 80) [41], an Alsatian teaching in a naval college at Paris.
But Froude was the first to note the development along the hull of ships [42] of what came to be known as the boundary layer, a phenomenon of viscous shear which eventually was shown to be a function of the Reynolds number.

On tanks with dry ammunition stowage, one-inch thick applique armor was welded over the sponson ammunition racks and to the turret on the right of the gun mount where interior armor had been ground away to make room for the gunner's controls.
The Shermans equaled or outmatched those tanks when they met in North Africa but they were not up to the task of fighting duels with the subsequent Panzers and Tigers, especially when the latter were employed in defense, as mobile pillboxes.
